Personal Lines Underwriters are responsible for underwriting risks (selection/rejection of new and renewal business) and managing a profitable portfolio within their stated authority and guidelines. Usually works with minimal supervision, conferring with management on unusual matters.The Underwriters also provide underwriting support and direction to agencies to improve their growth and profit objectives for new and in-force personal lines insurance business. Emphasis is placed on agency/underwriting relationships in support of corporate goals.Responsibilities/Essential Functions :
- Analyzes and evaluates new submissions and renewal accounts to determine acceptability of the risk- Reviews, interprets and processes data from various sources, including applications, forms and loss history- Able to articulate and practice principles of risk management within specific limits of authority including knowledge of exposure/hazard identification and control- Clearly communicates appetite, underwriting standards, declination reasons and coverage advantages to Agents and internal partners to ensure profitability and generate a flow of quality new business submissions and retention.- Cultivates strong business relationships (internal and external) by proactively communicating and conveying ownership and commitment- Anticipates and meets the needs of customers and readily adjusts priorities to respond to pressing and changing client requirements- Researches and responds to policy questions- Gathers information and stays informed of laws and regulations- May require additional training and/or advance insurance education to further expand underwriting knowledge and expertise.- Traveling in support of agency visits/Industry functionsKey Measures of Success (should align with goals):
Required to meet or exceed established individual, team and company metrics including:
- Service Level- Agreements- Productivity- Underwriting Quality- Successful product audit results- Contribution to profitability (underwriting decisions are made within assigned authority level and properly documented)Position RequirementsRequired Skills & Experience:
- Bachelor's degree preferred- 5+ years of High-Value Underwriting expertise is a must- Excellent written and verbal communication- Experience with all Personal Lines of business:
Auto, Home, Dwelling Fire, Boat, Umbrella- Strong relationship building and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work in a team environment- Ability to work in a fast paced environment- Analytical, problem solving and negotiation skills- Willingness to train and educate internal and external partners- Ability and willingness to travelBenefits to joining The Hanover's team:
