The purpose of the Institute is to undertake, promote and disseminate research regarding the Chicano/Latino experience in California and the United States. The Institute 's research activities serve the intellectual interests of Chicana/o Studies students, researchers and faculty from all departments on the UCSB campus. Together with the Chicana and Chicano Studies Department, the Institute supports research that promotes the growing national and international stature of the field and assists in the recruitment and retention of Chicano/Latino faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates at UC Santa Barbara. The Institute houses an active publishing unit. In this vein, the Institute produces Ventana Abierta, an internationally renowned Spanish-language journal devoted to literature written in the United States. Along with the Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies, the Institute hosts the Luis Leal Endowed Chair, currently held by Professor Maria Herrera-Sobek. The Institute also promotes cultural education for the campus and community by sponsoring events and programs that draw from Chicana/o, Mexican and Latin American music, dance, theatre, film and art traditions.

Under the direction and supervision of the Business Officer, the Financial & Publications Assistant provides administrative, financial, and payroll support for the Chicano Studies Institute. Areas of responsibility include, travel and miscellaneous reimbursements, HR/payroll functions, managing publications and subscriptions, design, production, and distribution of the annual newsletter, and maintaining the Director's calendar.

Minimum Requirements
Excellent oral and written communication skills. Strong ability to organize, set priorities, take initiative and work independently. Must be detail oriented with a high degree of accuracy. Knowledge of a variety of applications such as MS word, Filemaker Pro, Excel, Adobe Photoshop and Pagemaker. Experience working with office equipment; fax machine, scanner, copier.

Desirable Requirements
Payroll Personnel System certified. Bi-lingual (Spanish) a plus, but not required.

Financial Administration
The Financial & Publications Assistant processes all reimbursements, invoices, honoraria, recharges, petty cash reimbursements, and advances. Serves as the Institute's primary travel coordinator. Processes all travel requests both foreign and domestic, including prior approval, travel advances, travel vouchers, hotel and airfare reservations, ground and air transportation reservations and on-campus parking. Primary preparer of the on-line travel voucher system.
