Performs routine duties. Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.


1.0 Performs computer data entry and retrieval tasks associated with the Pathology Information System

1 .1 Identifies correct patient through physician provided information.
1 .2 Ensures that all complete and correct information is entered into system for optimal patient billing and patient identification with no more than 2-4 incidences per evaluation period as noted by billing errors report.
1 .3 Locates existing medical records number with no creation of duplicate numbers due to registration errors as indicated by errors report review.

2.0 Assures specimen quality

2.1 Determines and maintains specimen validity associated with initial stages of specimen processing. Assesses adequacy of specimen according to established procedures and policies with no more than 2-3 exceptions per evaluation period.

2 .2 Verifies correct specimen and/or requisition labelling and documents all incorrect findings.
2 .3 Documents and Communicates clearly test/specimen problems to appropriate staff and documents all appropriate information as observed by supervisor.

2 .4 Communicates with specimen submitting area to resolve issues.

3.0 Performs clerical role as a liasion to other departments

3.1 Answer the phone in a professional manners as observed by supervisor and as indicated by feedback.

3.2 Responds to all telephone inquiries for specimen procurement and/or patient information in an organized professional manner.

3.3 Organizes workload, minimizing delay in the initial stages of specimen processing thus maximizing the efficiency of the operation as indicated by feedback and as observed by supervisor..

3 .3 Matches lab I.D. created with the appropriate specimen for the specific date and time of collection.
3 .4 Correctly labels all specimens in accordance with established guidelines.

3. 5 Faxes reports correctly to physican office.
3. 6 Files reports appropriately.

4.0 Specimen accessioning and handling
4.1 Sets up cassettes for embedding to match specimen requirements.

4.2 Organizes and stores specimen containers in an orderly fashion

4.3 Removes containers as indicated to safely process formalin from older samples.

4.4 Conducts monitoring of morgue area twice per week.

4.6 Performs activities associated with the non-technical aspect of specimen processing

5.0 Performs other tasks as assigned by manager.


EDUCATION: High school diploma or equivalent, working toward histology degree or previous specimen accessioning experience.

EXPERIENCE: Demonstrated familiarity with medical terminology

SPECIAL SKILLS: Ability to type a minimum of 30 WPM, Good telephone/communication and interpersonal skills, Demonstrated attention to detail. Able to lift up to 25 lbs.
