Position Summary:

The National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) is inviting applications for the position of HPC Department Head. The HPC Department within NERSC includes the Advanced Technologies Group, Application Performance Group, Computational Systems Group and User Engagement Group, a department of approximately 40 technical staff members and postdocs.

The HPC department is responsible for assessing new emerging technologies, transitioning the broad workload to advanced architectures, procuring, deploying and supporting NERSCs supercomputers and ensuring the productivity of NERSCs 6000 users. The HPC Department Head is a member of the management team that sets strategic directions and prioritizes work across NERSC, and works closely with colleagues in the national laboratories, leading research universities, Department of Energy and HPC communities.

Specific Responsibilities:


Serve as a key member of NERSCs leadership team to set strategic directions for NERSC and influence the direction of the HPC industry on a large scale, nationwide basis.

Provide vision and strategic direction for the HPC Department

Communicate with stakeholders within the Department of Energy Office of Science

Assure NERSCs HPC systems are high performing and productive platforms for NERSC users.

Provide effective line management for the department by hiring excellent staff and conducting performance management. Assure staff are meeting goals and provide both positive and constructive feedback to staff and keep them motivated.

Play a key leadership role in designing and deploying advanced technology supercomputers.

Oversee preparation for DOE and UC sponsored program reviews, and act as a peer reviewer for other organizations.

Work closely with other teams and departments at NERSC to enable large scale data intensive applications to run seamlessly across NERSCs supercomputing and data systems.

Maintain a work environment that embraces diversity and fosters creativity and innovation and ensures that DOE and Laboratory rules and policies are observed.

Required Qualifications:


Bachelors degree (or equivalent related experience) in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Computational Science (or related fields) and a minimum of 12 years related experience and 5 years in a supervisory role.

Nationally recognized expertise in one or more of the following areas: HPC architectures, HPC applications performance, HPC systems procurement and operations, DOE Office of Science applications and user requirements.

Demonstrated ability to lead a team oriented organization and attract, retain and develop a talented and diverse staff. Ability to foster positive work relationship and resolve technical and personal conflicts with diplomacy and tact.

Experience running applications on, or deploying large scale HPC systems.

Proven track record managing large organizations and/or complex projects

Ability to gather requirements from the user community and turn requirements into system and software characteristics.

Ability to travel to meetings, workshops and conferences.

Additional Desired Qualifications:


Masters or PhD degree in related fields.

Ability to speak on national level on HPC systems, technologies, performance and applications.

Expertise in emerging exascale technologies.
