Position Summary:

Berkeley Labs National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) is the high performance computing center for the Department of Energy's Office of Science programs. We are looking for a talented systems engineer with a storage focus to join the Archival Storage Team. The Archival Storage Team is part of the Storage Systems Group which manages the NERSC data archive and global file systems.

You will focus on deployment and administration of production HPSS systems and associated archival storage infrastructure. This position will focus on long-term preservation of scientific data by managing the NERSC active archive systems and dependent hardware, software, and operating systems, including storage servers, fibre channel networks, disk arrays, and tape libraries.

Specific Responsibilities:

*

Installation, tuning, and backup/recovery of storage system metadata and statistics databases using a variety of SQL database software.
*

Contribute to the planning, implementation, and testing of database infrastructure, including server and storage array configuration.
*

Physical installation of database infrastructure.
*

Troubleshooting database hardware, software, and performance issues.
*

Interacting with vendors for service and support of software and hardware issues.
*

Database performance troubleshooting.
*

Assisting NERSC users and staff in generating solutions and optimizing their use of the NERSC active archives.
*

Participation in 24x7 on-call rotation for archival storage issues.

Additional Desired Responsibilities:

*

Enhancement and automation of storage system capabilities and functions using a variety of programming or scripting languages such as C, Java, Python, Perl and shell.
*

Participation in procurements to fulfill storage system requirements.
*

Evaluating new technologies to increase capabilities and performance of the archive.

Required Qualifications:

*

Bachelors degree in computer science, computer information systems, data science, or related field, and/or equivalent experience.
*

Minimum of 4 years experience as a system administrator with experience in enterprise support of Unix variants (Linux/Solaris/AIX).
*

Thorough understanding of relational database theory and concepts.
*

Relational database user and management skills, including the ability to construct and automate SQL queries, database updates, and database backups.
*

Experience with database installation and tuning in a Unix/Linux production environment.
*

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, ability to work effectively across multiple business and technical teams.
*

Highly self-motivated and willing to learn new technologies.
*

Excellent problem solving skills and use of good judgment. Ability to think independently, work collaboratively and contribute to an active intellectual environment. Ability to schedule and lead a small group of people and/or projects. Systematic problem solving approach, coupled with a strong sense of ownership and drive.
*

Demonstrated creativity, initiative and ability to design, develop and implement solutions consistent with emerging technology challenges.
*

Demonstrated ability to deliver results on time with high quality.

Additional Desired Qualifications:

*

IBM DB2 installation and administration experience.
*

Experience with other popular database software such as Postgres or MySQL.
*

Experience with developing tools using various programming or scripting languages such as C, C , Perl, shell, Java or Python.
*

Experience with configuration management software such as puppet, ansible, or cfengine.
