Job Description
Leads the development and execution of the business development strategy for Shire s GI, Endocrine and Internal Medicine Franchise (the Business Unit ). Responsibilities include opportunity identification, transaction planning, analysis, negotiation, and execution, for all forms of product acquisitions including in-licensing, product acquisitions, joint ventures, co-promotions, distribution agreements, and corporate mergers and acquisitions. In collaboration with the Franchise Head, senior R&D management, other members of the Transactions Team, and the Head of Strategy, supports strategic planning efforts for the Business Unit, including life-cycle management and R&D strategy. Responsibilities also include supporting or leading other priority projects on an as-needed basis.

Sets direction for and manages the business development function in the following transaction-related activities related the Business Unit:

40% Identifies, prioritizes, evaluates, and, in collaboration with the Head of Transactions, the Head of Business Development Finance, and Shire Legal negotiates and executes the full range of inbound transactions.

20% In collaboration with the Head of Transactions, the Head of Business Development Finance, and Shire Legal, defines, develops, and recommends the most appropriate deal structure for each opportunity.

10% Working collaboratively with Commercial Assessment, Due Diligence, and Finance, develops forecasts and valuations and coordinates due diligence for each opportunity, including market research, market access analysis, and legal, financial, and operating assessments.

10% Expedites work with investment bankers and Shire Finance to generate and refine pro forma financial statements and financial models to evaluate opportunities. Works with senior management of targeted companies to refine models and understand assumptions for product development, commercialization, and life-cycle management.

10% In collaboration with the Business Unit, R&D, and the Head of Strategy:
Develops the Therapeutic Area (TA) business development strategy;
Identifies and targets emerging technologies and opportunities related to products in development or on the market which align with TA business development strategy or would otherwise complement the Business Unit s core competencies and strategic direction; and
Conducts research on new products and companies to identify new opportunities.

5% Establishes and maintains relationships with key individuals in transaction candidate companies as well as a range of investment professionals and attends and delivers presentations at key industry and partnering congresses.

5% Supports strategic planning efforts of the Business Unit.

Bachelor s Degree required; advanced degree in Science a plus
MBA or JD required
A minimum of 10 years of biopharmaceutical transactional experience required with a demonstrated record of completed licensing and M&A transactions
Business development experience in the GI therapeutic area required
Experience leading transactional teams required
Experience with financial analysis and valuation of biopharmaceutical products and companies and advanced Excel/modeling skills required
Market research experience required
Experience in a global environment with a demonstrated knowledge of US and International markets preferred
Thorough understanding of commercial aspects of the business including brand management, sales planning and execution, market access, patient advocacy, regulatory environments and reimbursement challenges for relevant markets preferred
Highly-developed understanding of global drug development, regulatory processes, and market access concepts preferred
Experience preparing and delivering presentations to senior management and Boards of Directors as well as key congresses required
