Position Summary:

This position is responsible for performing clerical functions for a patient care unit, facilitating the flow of information between medical staff and departments to maximize unit efficiency. Provides administrative input regarding the internal operations of the department.

This position has no responsibility for providing care to patients.

Essential Functions:

- Provides communication to hospital staff, patients, families, and visitors.
- Provides guidance to care providers on how to enter patient orders into the computer system.
- Processes paperwork to order medical treatments and tests; collects/complies/retrieves patient's test and lab results.
- Locates physicians for nursing staff and contacts physicians to communicate appropriate patient care information.
- Orders, stocks and maintains clerical and patient supplies.
- Contributes to the development of unit standards to enhance the efficiency of the department?s paperwork maintenance.
- Transfers information to patient kardex, nurse charts, patient assignment list, lab, x-ray and other unit boards.
- In the event of a computer downtime, process paper orders. Once the downtime event is over, enter the 'downtime occurrence order,' start and stop time, into each patient's electronic chart.
- May work with manager/designee to reconcile unit charges.
- Maintains and updates unit activity boards.
- Assists in orienting new employees regarding the clerical functions of the unit and updates health unit coordinator's reference manual as needed.
- Schedules some patient appointments.
- Maintains patient records on unit, as needed.
- May transport patients.
- Admits/Discharges/Transfers function per unit standard.
- Cleans and maintains unit equipment, including mobile computer devices.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

- Demonstrated potential ability to perform the essential functions as outlined above.
- Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills.
- Ability to successfully complete power chart training.
- Demonstrated customer service skills.
- Ability to work in a busy environment.

Qualifications:
Required:

- One year of clerical experience or equivalency.
- Successful completion of a Medical Terminology course within one year of hire.

Preferred:

- Basic Life Support Health Care Provider card or obtain one within one month of hire may be required.
