Position Summary:

Berkeley Labs Information Technology (IT) Division has an an immediate opening for a Computing Facilities Engineer. Reporting to the IT/Infrastructure Services Department Head, you will work independently with broad range of authority to oversee the day-to-day scheduling and activities required for the design, installation, modification, maintenance, and repair of the communications cabling infrastructure and data center infrastructure for the IT Division. The position will require high level of creativity, ingenuity and inventiveness with project design and scheduling to minimize risks and maximize the impact of available staff and financial resources and works with Facilities, Environmental Health and Safety, and Protective Services personnel to coordinate work between those groups and the IT Division.

Specific Responsibilities:

Provide technical leadership on the planning and guidance of work to facilities staff, architects, engineers, contractors and stakeholders to meet project deadlines, technical specifications and user requirements.
*

Participate in design meetings to document telecommunication system requirements and ensure that LBNL ICS standards are integrated into the design documents.
*

Provide detailed cost estimates for copper/fiber communications cabling and data center infrastructure projects.
*

Collaborate with and respond to project managers, scientists, and engineers regarding their overall communications infrastructure needs and when warranted provide economical alternatives to meet requirements and project / task schedules and budgets.
*

Conceive, plan and implement original approaches to solve complex problems of diverse scope in a safe, cost-effective, sustainable, and timely manner.
*

Design communications cabling routes and procure resources to complete required tasks in specified time frames.
*

Represent the department and/or Division for projects and efforts having a Lab wide impact, such as, the planning and design of new communications infrastructure for new and modified buildings and other Lab wide projects requiring communications facilities.
*

Independently plan, prioritize and schedule daily work assignments based on telephone and network move, add, and change work requests.
*

Ensure staff and contractors are properly trained on building fire, Department of Energy (DOE), and LBNL safety requirements, and all effort and material is properly documented for each work order.
*

Inspect communications cabling and wiring installations to ensure completed work meets technical performance criteria and provide technical interpretation and guidance on any issues.
*

Occasionally work during maintenance windows that may be scheduled for evenings, early mornings, weekends, or holidays.

Required Qualifications:

*

Bachelors Degree and eight years experience with designing and implementing a wide range of IT infrastructure projects and/or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
*

Demonstrated ability to provide sound technical interpretation and guidance on the most complex computing problems. Must be able to take conceptual ideas and design specifications and independently determine most suitable inside building or outside plant cable designs.
*

Ability to write scope of work requirements, obtain bids from outside sources and place purchase order requests, identify, evaluate, and recommend appropriate new cabling and documentation technologies for LBNL.
*

High level of attention to detail in the areas of documentation and workmanship.
*

Highly motivated towards safety and competent to train contractors or Laboratory employees on proper Laboratory safety rules and requirements.
*

Expert knowledge of industry standards for designing, engineering, installing, maintaining and testing outside and inside cable and fiber installations (EIA/TIA, IEEE, ISO).
*

Demonstrated experience with National Electric Code, Fire and Smoke cable installation practices and procedures.
*

Demonstrated skills creating, modifying and sharing layered drawings using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software.
*

Strong electronics background required to understand electrical characteristics of copper and fiber circuits and power delivery in telecommunications spaces and data centers.
*

Comprehensive knowledge of data communications concepts and implementation, as well as, ability to install, configure and operate equipment and software applications used to test copper and fiber cable and circuits.
*

Initiative and good judgment in scheduling, leading or instructing others.
*

Adaptability to constantly shifting demands, limited resources and tight time constraints.
*

Must possess a valid California driver's license.

Additional Desired Qualifications:

*

Five years work experience in cable installation and termination techniques.
*

Demonstrated competency in interpreting LBNL, DOE, University of California (UC), local, state and federal policies and apply industry standards to Lab projects.
*

BICSI RCDD (Registered Communication Distribution Designer) or RITP (Registered Information Technology Professional) certification.
*

PMP (Project Management Professional) certification, with extensive knowledge of project management, (i.e., project quality, risk, scope, integration, communications, resources, procurement, cost and time management, task relationships and critical path).
*

Comprehensive understanding of data center technologies, trends, efficiency and environmental standards, and industry leaders. Data center design or management certification.
