Infrastructure Systems Engineer

Infrastructure Systems Engineer is a member of the Authentication and Collaboration Solutions Group (ACS) and is primarily responsible for integration, strategy, and architectural improvements for Stanford's authentication infrastructure. This includes Stanford's single-sign-on framework, Kerberos-based remote management protocol, OAuth-based authorization framework, and secure credential management system. The Infrastructure Systems Engineer will report to the Linux Infrastructure manager.

The Authentication and Collaboration Solutions Group (ACS) is responsible for Stanford's central authentication infrastructure, including Kerberos, Active Directory, OpenLDAP, and Shibboleth. The group is responsible for guiding Stanford's technical strategy in these areas in coordination with larger University needs and client requests.

The Infrastructure Systems Engineer will be primarily responsible for the design, configuration, integration, and operation of software that used in Stanford's authentication infrastructure.

The Infrastructure Systems Engineer is expected to keep up-to-date with trends and new developments in the industry and relevant open source communities, and to be in touch with peers at other higher education institutions.

The Infrastructure Systems Engineer will also be expected to write and maintain documentation and procedures, contribute to strategic and project planning, be self-motivated, possess excellent time management skills, and work with the team, stakeholders, and clients to meet project, team, and departmental goals.

CORE DUTIES*:

Build, install, configure, analyze, tune, and troubleshoot operating system to achieve optimum performance levels.

Resolve difficult system problems and provide consultation or training.

Configure and assist in the design of system.

Manage hardware, software, and utilities for installation, modification, troubleshooting, maintenance, and upgrades of operating systems and workstation environments.

Monitor and analyze resource usage to recommend/develop enhancements to system capabilities and performance.

Compare, evaluate, and implement new technologies, and integrate systems into the computing environment.

Document systems infrastructure for users, support and consulting personnel, and developers.

Train personnel who provide support and consulting services to users.

Act as liaison with various departments across campus.

Facilitate vendor relationships.

Education & Experience:
Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Experience with multiple types of operating systems or expert knowledge in one.

Experience with managing an integrated computing environment.

Extensive experience in multiple programming languages for system development.

Experience with networked environments.

Experience with network storage solutions.

Experience with configuring and maintaining routers.

Demonstrated knowledge of security protocols.

Ability to manage shared resources and perform moderately complex tasks.

Ability to work well independently and as a team member.

Ability to train to others in applications and operating system fundamentals.

Experience with middleware and infrastructure.

ADDITIONAL REQUIRED SKILLS:

Demonstrated experience managing Linux-based systems and services at scale.

Programming and software design skills, including experience with Perl, Python, Java, PHP, Bash or other similar programming language.

Demonstrated expertise working effectively in a shared software development environment, including version control, bug tracking, release management, and code review. Experience with Git a plus.

Comfort with public speaking. He or she should be able to give a detailed technical presentation, training, or high-level executive briefing.

Must have strong problem-solving and analytical skills and demonstrated ability to approach complex problems logically and systematically.

Must have strong written, verbal skills, interpersonal skill, self-motivated and work effectively in a team environment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Demonstrated experience with automated configuration management system such as Puppet or Chef.

Demonstrated experience supporting several of: Kerberos, Shibboleth, multi-factor authentication systems, OAuth 2.0 services, and/or other web single-sign-on frameworks at scale.

Demonstrated experience in SAML Service Provider and SAML Identity Provider.

Demonstrated experience writing system integrations.

Demonstrated experience using and/or administering LDAP environments.

Demonstrated experience integrating enterprise architecture with cloud systems.

Preference is given to those candidates with Shibboleth administration experience including managing a Shibboleth Identity Provider.

Ability to set and accomplish goals, to meets deadlines, and delivers high quality of infrastructure work with limited management oversight.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks, grasp lightly/fine manipulation. Frequently sitting.

Occasionally stand/walk, twist/bend/stoop/squat, reach/work above shoulders, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.

Rarely kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other, grasp forcefully, use a telephone, writing by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 21 40 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Exposed to high voltage electricity, noise 80dB TWA, confined spaces, hot temperatures, heavy metals.
