Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics

The Chou laboratory in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at University of California San Francisco has an opening for a specialist at Junior or Assistant level, dependent on the candidate s qualifications. This position will be research focused and involve molecular cloning, protein expression & purification, and data analysis. The candidate will also be involved in general purchasing, stock prep/maintenance, media prep, and assist other lab members in their projects.

We seek a candidate with strong quantitative analysis skills, the ability to multi-task and organize effectively, and attention to detail. Experience in microbiology or biochemistry a plus.

This is a full-time position, but there is start-date flexibility for the right candidate. This would be an ideal position for a recent or upcoming graduate seeking to gain laboratory research experience using state-of-the-art techniques in both biochemistry and microbiology prior to applying to graduate school. It is our intention for the selected candidates to contribute meaningfully to projects and co-author peer-reviewed publications.

Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions, and may participate in University and Public Service. Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period. Salary and rank will be commensurate with the applicants experience and training.

Required qualifications:
* Completion of B.S. or B.A. in life sciences upon hire
* A minimum of one year of research-related experience or two full-time summers in a laboratory
* Excellent communication and organization skills
* Attention to details, fast learner, cooperative, dependable
* Ability to think creatively, problem solve efficiently and independently
* Ability to manage multiple task and priorities
* Ability to maintain accurate and thorough records
* Familiarity with sterile technique
* Ability to think quantitatively about biological problems
* Ability to maintain accurate and thorough records

Preferred qualifications:
* Experience with molecular cloning
* Familiarity with protein expression and purification
* Commitment of two years strongly desired
