Department: Laurentian Medical Clinic
JOB SUMMARY: Under the administrative supervision of the Clinic Manager and under the medical direction of the Physician Director of the lab, the Lab Technician is responsible for collecting specimens and accurately performing laboratory tests. Performs related duties to support patient care, including vital signs, weight checks. The Lab Technician is an integral member of the patient care team and works collaboratively with Physician, nursing and clerical staff to provide quality patient care. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education: High School diploma or equivalent. Associate Degree as a Medical Assistant or a Medical Lab Technician from an accredited institution; (if Chequamegon Clinic, Technical Diploma as a Medical Assistant or a Medical Lab Technician from an accredited institution) or completion of LPN or RN program. Experience: Demonstrated phlebotomy proficiency and experience in a physician office setting with a moderate complexity lab rating. Licensure/Certification/Registration: Basic cardiac life support (BCLS). PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Education: N/A Experience: N/A Licensure/Certification/Registration: N/A SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of laboratory functions in a Physician office setting. Knowledge of Universal Precautions, MSDS, generally accepted safety practices and quality control practices for lab services. Knowledge of medical record documentation practices related to lab services. Knowledge of personal computing applications. Knowledge of customer relations principles. Ability to perform phlebotomies and fingerstick collections and obtain accurate vital signs. Ability to accurately complete waived and moderately complex lab tests. Ability to work independently under general administrative and medical direction. Ability to prioritize tasks without compromising patient care. Ability to demonstrate positive customer relations and present a professional image. Ability to work constructively with other persons. Ability to maintain patient confidentiality. Ability to do routine computer entry functions. Ability to write legibly, see and perform visual microscopic analysis, read, hear, walk, speak English. PHYSICAL DEMANDS/LIFTING REQUIREMENTS: Prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing/walking; considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching. Lift objects up to twenty-five (25) pounds in weight. Work more than eight (8) hours but less than twelve (12) hour shifts. AGE SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES: Skilled at assessment and knowledgeable of growth and development. Provides appropriate care respective to the ages of the patients served per clinical environment. WORKING CONDITIONS: Regularly exposed to the risk of bloodborne diseases. Exposed to laboratory chemicals and electrical energy hazards. May be exposed to unpleasant patient elements. Work assignments may include more than one specimen collection setting. Unscheduled (Casual) As scheduled High school diploma or equivalent is required BCLS certification required Relevant experience is required
