JOB DUTIES:

Provide support for Principal Investigator in a neuro-immunological lab studying the basis of autoimmune disease. Provide for the care of experimental mice kept under aseptic conditions. Oversee maintenance and breeding of different transgenic mice strains under aseptic conditions. Order and monitor usage of laboratory supplies and ensure all biological safety protocols are followed. Maintain breeding records and determine mouse genotypes by PCR.



JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Demonstrated knowledge of basic genetics, molecular biology and biochemical principles. Ability to use basic laboratory equipment, including centrifuge, pH meter, incubators, tissue culture hoods, PCR machines and electrophoresis apparatus. Knowledge and skill in handling mice. Ability to handle SPF mice in a safe and humane manner. Ability to perform all work related to the specialized SPF germ-free mouse facility under strictly controlled environmental and biological conditions. Ability to understand and follow safety procedures. Ability to follow detailed written protocols; ability to repeat experiments with consistency. Ability to learn new methods and protocols and to adapt these to current laboratory situations. Ability to organize raw data into a comprehensible form and to create and maintain records accurately. Interpersonal and communication skills to effectively interact with faculty, staff, postdoctoral fellows and students and to effectively convey experimental results. Ability to maintain orderly inventory of stored materials, supplies, and reagents and to maintain records of order requisitions and delivery receipts. Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal supervision. Demonstrated computer skills including knowledge of Excel, MS Word and WordPerfect.
