DESCRIPTION

The Department of Life Sciences Core Curriculum (LS Core) at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) invites applicants for a position as an Academic Administrator.
Provide instruction and curriculum development in the LS Core on a quarterly basis including summer session as directed by the Chairman for the Life Sciences Core Curriculum, a cross-divisional instructional program including: 1) Evolution, Ecology and Biodiversity; 2) Cells, Tissues, and Organs; 3) Introduction to Molecular Biology; 4) Genetics; and 5) Life, Concepts, and Issues (General Education). Full time position and level of appointment and salary commensurate with qualifications, experience and duties..
Duties include the following: Participate in faculty committees responsible for Core oversight and course development; solicit feedback from faculty, instructors, and graduate and undergraduate students on effectiveness of Core curriculum; regularly provide instruction in the Life Sciences Core courses a minimum of 4 courses a year.

Develop and help to coordinate initiatives within the Life Sciences Core in the design of laboratory and computer-assisted learning modules. Design and develop, in conjunction with other LS Core instructors, means to more effectively integrate concepts and topics taught in lecture. As a member of the Core group, represent the Division to coordinate with other University initiatives in computer-assisted learning or related instructional enhancement.

Participate in scholarly activities (conferences; societies; publication of research results or textbooks) in the areas of undergraduate science education, educational technology, science curriculum development, and/or computer-assisted learning. Participate in occasional basic research in areas of interest to these other activities, as approved by the Chair.

Author and serve as Principal Investigator for intramural and extramural funding applications for divisional initiatives associated with science-curriculum innovation and reform, instructional technology, and computer-assisted learning.

Qualifications:
Qualifications include a Ph.D. degree in a life science discipline (Biology, Microbiology, Physiology, Biochemistry, Neuroscience, Genetics or other related field); experience in undergraduate teaching at a university level, including teaching scientific writing methods to undergraduate students; substantial familiarity with biology concepts related to molecular biology and genetics; and substantial knowledge of pedagogy as related to life science instruction; experience with design, development, and use of computer assisted learning in the life sciences.
