JOB DESCRIPTIONAPPLY GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
Under the direct supervision of the Practice Manager, the Medical Assistant is responsible for assisting the healthcare team with the care and management of patients prior to and during their visit. The Medical Assistant will perform routine administrative and clinical tasks to maintain and support the office and to assure efficient patient flow through the office. The Medical Assistant will also assist the physician or other licensed clinical staff with point of care testing, specimen collection, education and communication to patients.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Greets and escorts patients into exam rooms.
Assists patients with ambulation to assure their comfort and dignity during exam.
As instructed, documents reason for patient visit on intake form to be given directly to physician.
Obtains vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, temperature), weight and height.
Flags issues needing immediate response.
Sets ups, cleans and stocks patient exam rooms.
Checks refrigerator temperature daily and document results on log.
Tracks,orders, transports and maintains supplies.
Answers phone, takes messages, and notifies medical staff appropriately.
May schedule/confirm appointments.
Ensures that data information sheets are prepared, progress notes stamped and place in patient file.
Assists with procuring medical records from Health Info. Mgmt. and/or Xray results.
Monitors the maintenance of the practice's sanitation and overall appearance.
Assists practice secretaries in handling bump/cancellation lists.
Takes and records co-pays from patients.
Arranges ambulance transportation as needed.
Sorts/distributes lab results daily to appropriate physician/nurse practitioner.
Assists in the collection, labeling and processing of specimens.
Assist physicians and nurses with patient care support activities relating to referrals, laboratory work, diagnostic testing, patient education, etc.
Under the direction of a physician or a registered nurse, provide assistance by returning patient telephone calls related to prescription refills,
laboratory results, referrals, etc. Additionally, provide assistance with placing telephone calls to pharmacies to request prescription refills, as
specifically ordered by a physician.
Maintain a high quality patient care environment by cleaning, preparing, and stocking all examination rooms and treatment areas in accordance with
established standards. Assist in the care, cleaning, sterilization, and maintenance of medical equipment and instruments. This includes monitoring
relevant expiration dates and established maintenance schedules. May provide assistance in maintaining medical supply inventories, including monitoring
relevant expiration dates.
In accordance with Practice protocols, ensure that charts, vouchers, ancillary reports, films, and other necessary paperwork are available to be used
by the physician and his/her team during the visit for all previously scheduled patient appointments. Obtain and sort laboratory and diagnostic test results
in accordance with Practice protocols.
As requested, assist Practice Management Team and/or physicians with certain coordination functions/activities that allow for the efficient
deployment and utilization of Medical Assistants throughout the Practice. Also, assist with on-the-job training and support for newly hired Medical
Assistants as well as with ongoing leadership training.
Understand, respect and demonstrate patient confidentiality in all endeavors. Understand the legal ramifications of violating any component of
patient confidentiality. Understand and demonstrate the protocol and related procedures for the release of patient information.
Under the direct supervision and instruction of a physician, administer oral medications, except where specifically prohibited by a relevant statute
or regulation such as in the case of controlled substances (but not limited to controlled substances).
Under the specific supervision and instruction of a physician, administer treatments, provide care for or dress wounds, provide care related to tubes
or drains, remove sutures, and provide relevant patient education or counseling.
Understand, respect and demonstrate compliance with established parameters of the Medical Assistant position by performing only those activities
delineated in this job description. Specifically prohibited activities include (but are not limited to):
a. Administering medication via injection.
b. Preparing, administering and/or managing intravenous and inhaled medication and treatments.
c. Making independent medical decisions regarding patients either in person or via the telephone. The Medical Assistant may, however, advise patients
based on a physician-directed formulary or act as an information conduit between the physician/team and the patient. In such cases, the Medical Assistant
should document the communication.
d. Assessing patient acuity or independently making any other type of patient assessment, including assessing the clinical and/or physical status of
e. Closing/suturing wounds.
f. Managing and/or independently prescribing medication refills.
g. Managing and/or independently providing medication samples.
h. Independently referring patients for other services or to other physicians.
Perform receptionist, clerical and other functions as needed to support the efficient operation of the Practice, unless such duties are specifically
prohibited above or by any relevant statute or regulation or unless such duties require other certification or training, which has not been achieved.
Ambulatory office or clinic setting, May be exposed to hazardous chemicals or fumes, bodily fluids and disease .
HOSPITAL WIDE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Works within legal, regulatory, accreditation and ethical practice standards relevant to the position and as established by BWH/Partners, follows safe
practices required for the position, complies with appropriate BWH and Partners policies and procedures, fulfills any training required by BWH and/or
Partners, as appropriate, brings potential matters of non-compliance to the attention of the supervisor or other appropriate hospital staff.
1. Minimum of a High School diploma, GED or equivalent experience.
2. Graduate of an approved Medical Assistant certification program (or demonstrated knowledge of competencies required to perform essential functions of position).
3. One two years of successful working experience as a Medical Assistant in a medical practice setting.
4. Must be OSHA, CLIA and HIPAA knowledgeable.
5. CPR Certification for the Healthcare Provider required.
Ability to perform multiple tasks efficiently and accurately.
Ability to problem solve and prioritize. Must be able to make fast, educated decisions in emergency situations.
Knowledge of medical terminology.
Ability to read and interpret documents accurately such as safety rules and patient charts.
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages and volume.
Ability to perform simple arithmetic calculations for proper patient identification, to take and record weight and height measurements, vital signs and blood
pressure collection as authorized.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Excellent customer service skills in order to deal with high volume of patients and crowed waiting rooms.
Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population of patients in person and over the phone.
Basic computer and telephone skills.
Knowledge of aseptic technique and Universal Precautions.
