JOB DESCRIPTIONGENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
Under general supervision, carries out all policies and performs all tests procedures in accordance with the departments standard operating procedures. Works independently in an efficient and organized manner to assure accurate results and records. The work requires a professional level of knowledge to read and interpret accurately test results used by physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases.
Assists with the training of students, residents, and new personnel, and participates in research, development and implementation of laboratory procedures.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.Assists with the training of medical technology students, residents and fellows, and the training and orientation of new employees.
2.Participates in research, development and implementation of laboratory procedures.
3.Performs complex laboratory tests and procedures on blood and other body fluids, according to the guidelines of the department, preparing samples and reagents for testing. Follows the laboratorys procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining recirds of patient results.
4.Responsible for the accuracy, interpretation and reporting of all test results.
5.Performs routine maintenance on equipment and quality control for all reagents. Documents all corrective action when test systems deviate from laboratorys established performance specifications.
6.Keeps accurate records of quality control, quality assurance and maintenance. Adheres to laboratorys quality control policies, documents quality control activities, instrument calibrations and maintenance performed.
7.Works under time constraints and refers problems and/or unusual results to appropriate parties.
8.Performs clerical and support services as needed, such as answering the telephone, interview of sperm bank patients and patient reception.
9.Participates in proficiency testing of unknowns and internal and external continuing education programs to keep current in developments in their field. Maintains records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples.
10.Maintains department service standards with particular attention to personal/behavioral, staff teamwork and patient interaction guidelines.
11.Is responsible to be aware of JCAHO National Patient Safety Goals and complies with BWH and laboratory policies and procedures.
12.Performs other duties as necessary.
1.Two years of experience as a Medical Technologist I at Brigham & Womans Hospital.
2.Evaluated at no lower than a commendable level for the past two evaluations.
3.A Bachelors Degree in Medical Technology from an accredited college or university, including a one year internship in a clinical laboratory or equivalent.
4.ASCP registration or equivalent preferred.
1.Must have a high level of analytical ability and judgment to relate test results to normal or pathological states, to resolve technical equipment problems and interpret quality control data.
2.Must possess visual acuity to distinguish fine gradations of color and/or texture, and manual dexterity sufficient to work with delicate instruments.
3.Must have the ability to work independently, evaluate situations and act appropriately.
4.Must possess interpersonal skills to interact courteously and effectively with co-workers, physicians, other hospital personnel and other outside contacts.
5.Must have neat and orderly work habits.
6.Must have the ability to pay careful attention to detail and to adhere to written protocols.
7.Must be able to remain calm and efficient in stressful situations.
2.Exposure to odors, infectious materials and other hazardous substances.
3.Visual strains encountered while closely examining specimens and while using microscope.
4.Work requires frequent standing, walking and occasional lifting or carrying of supplies.
5.Noise level is high due to continuous operation of lab equipment.
6.Very busy and constantly changing work environment. Noisy and stressful.
