JOB DESCRIPTIONPosition Overview
MLP attorney provides legal counsel, advice, and representation to patient-clients on a broad range of legal topics as specified the in Medical Legal Partnership agreement with the University of Kansas Medical Center and the Department of Family Medicine. The attorney is responsible for caseload, student supervision and office management.
Client Representation (70%)
Represents patient clients in litigation that presents barriers to health outcomes, including court appearances, drafting court pleadings and settlements, and conducting negotiations with opposing counsel. Analyzes legal issues and defenses, conducts discovery, interviews witnesses, obtains statements and reviews evidence. Provides limited scope representation in domestic cases, quiet title actions, expungements, etc. Drafts estate documents, such as powers of attorney, as required to facilitate improved health outcomes. Secure benefits for patient clients that aid in the delivery of healthcare. Conducts legal research, negotiation, and correspondence as necessary.
Supervision of Law student Externs (15%)
Provides guidance and oversight to law students assigned to the clinic through the Law School externship program.
Office Management (15%)
Teams with healthcare professionals at the KU Med Center to deliver integrated health, social, and legal services. Oversees the day to day operations of the MLP office at the Med Center. Supervises the Elizabeth M. Gallup Mental Health Fellow, law student interns and performs other duties as assigned.
* JD from an ABA accredited law school.
* License to practice law in Kansas.
* Three years of experience as an attorney.
* Demonstrated commitment to public service, advocacy, health care, and social justice.
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills, and excellent oral advocacy and writing skills.
* Missouri law license.
