The complex nature of breast disease processes involves multiple imaging modalities. Although the interdisciplinary team of radiologists, radiologic technologists, radiology nurses, and support staff plays a critical role in the delivery of health care services, the RT-M performs the radiographic examination that creates the images needed for diagnosis. Mammography integrates scientific knowledge and technical skills with effective patient interaction to provide quality patient care and useful diagnostic information.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES (MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES): The Mammography Radiologic Technologist must maintain a high degree of accuracy in radiographic positioning and radiation exposure technique. S/he must maintain knowledge of radiation protection and safety. RTs must prepare for and assist the radiologist in the completion of intricate mammographic examinations, including breast biopsy. They must remain sensitive to the physical and emotional needs of the patient through good communication, patient assessment, patient monitoring and patient care skills. Mammography is often an uncomfortable examination; therefore the mammographer is challenged to make each examination a positive experience. RT-Ms use professional and ethical judgment and critical thinking when performing their duties. Quality improvement and customer service allow the RT-M to be a responsible member of the healthcare team by continually assessing professional performance as mandated by the Mammography Quality Standards Act of 1992 (MQSA) and regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. RT-Ms embrace continuing education for optimal patient care, public education and enhanced knowledge and technical competence.
REQUIRED LICENSE, REGISTRY OR CERTIFICATION:1. Registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or registry-eligible in radiologic technology and mammography. To maintain ARRT certification, a level of expertise and awareness of changes and advances in practice, RTs must complete 24 hours of appropriate continuing education every two (2) years in each area of registry. In addition, continuing education mandated by the MQSA of 1992 must be met to lawfully practice the specialty of mammography. 2.
