Job Description

The Center for Health Policy Science and Tobacco Research has an opening for a Masters level Economist position in our Research Triangle Park, NC office. The center performs economic, policy, and program evaluation research in the area of public health, with an emphasis on tobacco use prevention and cessation. Our funding sources include a diverse set of contracts and grants with the FDA s Center for Tobacco Products, CDC s Office on Smoking and Health, the National Cancer Institute, and various state health departments around the country. The overarching goal of the center is to conduct objective, theory-driven research and evaluations to guide the development and implementation of tobacco control programs and policies and improve public health. The position offers significant professional development opportunities at a leading research organization with nationally recognized experience in tobacco control research. Economists in the Program perform a wide range of data analyses using econometric and other statistical techniques.

Daily Responsibilities

* Cleaning, coding, and analyzing large datasets

* Running multivariate linear, logistic, and other types of regression models

* Creating tables and other presentations of analysis results

* Working with project leaders to determine analysis strategies and approaches to specific research questions

* Writing substantial sections of reports and publications, with a focus on writing of data, methods, and results sections

* Ability to manage tasks for multiple project directors simultaneously


* Conduct economic and policy analyses of tobacco control programs and policies and other public health interventions

* Support implementation and outcome evaluations of public health policies, media campaigns, behavioral health programs and community interventions

* Collect data and compile databases by combining information from one or more sources using Excel, Stata, and/or SAS

* Manage and become proficient with large, complicated datasets

* Implement statistical models to perform statistical and econometric analyses using Stata, SAS, or R

* Develop models of disease-stage progression and epidemiological forecasting and associated economic costs and benefits

* Prepare tables and charts, and write sections of reports, papers, and proposals

* Present research findings to internal audiences, clients, and professional meetings

* Review the health, economics, and social science literatures to identify specific findings

* Communicate and work well with clients and project team members

* Work independently to efficiently manage multiple and overlapping timelines and deliverables


* Master s degree in Economics, Health Economics, Public Health, Health Policy and Management, or a related discipline

* Coursework completed in one or more of the following: Econometrics, Mathematical Economics, Applied Data Analysis, Health Economics/Health Policy/Health Behavior, Micro Economics, Micro Economics Theory, Statistics

* Demonstrated interest in Health Policy Analysis, Policy Research or related fields

* Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel is required; proficiency in Microsoft Access is a plus

* Proficiency in Stata or similar statistical software, such as SAS or R, is required

* Demonstrated oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to provide a writing sample if requested


* To qualify, applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States, and should not require now, or in the future, sponsorship for visa employment status.

Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated skills or experience in at least one of the following areas:

* Design and application of health economic analyses

* Experience with large population-based datasets such as the BRFSS, CPS, YRBS, NSDUH, and NHIS

* Disease modeling and forecasting

* Strong writing skills and ability to synthesize analysis results into clearly written scientific reports

* Work or academic research experience in economics

* Work or academic research experience in public health or epidemiology
