The Mechanic Diesel Engine applies basic and some advanced skills to perform routine and more complex operations using tools and equipment appropriate for the position. Applies a thorough understanding of the technical concepts, practices, and procedures and a thorough knowledge of industry standards and government regulations related to the repair and maintenance of electric, diesel, and gasoline industrial trucks.
Plans and accomplishes a range of operational assignments and tasks that are generally routine to moderately related to repair diesel and gasoline powered trucks.
Must have an understanding of Shop Safety and operations procedures. Must be able to operate specialized equipment and tools in an effective and safe manner. Be able to read or creates job orders based on the needs of drivers, observes and listens to trucks in operation to determine malfunctions and to plan work procedures. Diagnoses mechanical problems using charts, technical manuals, and previous experience. Works with electronic diagnostic equipment and computer-based technical reference materials.
Will conduct preventative maintenance to all truck and trailer types which will include changing of oil, oil filters, fuel filters, transmission oil, differential oil, air filters, belts and hoses, and inflate/deflate tire pressures. Will inspects components for excessive wear and replace as needed to prevent future breakdowns.
May perform or assist in minor to major repairs related to diesel engines, the lubricating system, cooling system, pneumatic truck brake system, electrical/wiring, batteries, charging system, cranking/starting system, suspension and steering, and wheels and tires. Will also have to perform in depth troubleshooting and service to engine brakes, turbochargers, fuel subsystems and injectors, electronic injections systems, after treatment systems (DEF), ABS/EBS systems, chassis electrical circuits, multiplexing, APU s, perform steering alignments, drive train service and inspections, HVAC servicing, and trailer inspections.
Overtime is a requirement of the job.
Current and valid driver s license required to operate company vehicles.
Performs other duties as required, which may include assignments in job classifications other than the primary assignment.
High school diploma or G.E.D.
Technical certification appropriate to the job and one (1) to five (5) or more years related experience in the energy industry in Diesel Truck Repair preferred. A combination of education, experience, and training may be substituted for the post-high school requirements.
Must be knowledgeable in the processes and procedures of the function and perform work of less experienced employees Must be able to read, write and speak the English language at a 12th-grade level, perform mathematical calculations required for the position, and learn to interpret and comprehend company policies, procedures, safety instructions, and other like documents used in an energy industry environment
Competent in the use of standard software applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel and operation of standard office equipment
Current and valid driver s license required
Make telephone calls and have direct personal contact with internal and external personnel
May perform work of lesser skilled employees
Safety training applicable to the job and the general work area
Additional Responsibilities: Works with regular supervision. Follows standard written or oral instructions. May need additional assistance for more complex tasks.
Working Conditions: Work is normally performed outside where exposure to conditions of extreme heat/cold, fumes and gases is common. Noise level is moderate to loud and includes sounds of trucks and like equipment. Job hazards include working in normal, light, and heavy truck repair activities and working around petroleum-based products and in all weather conditions. Overtime is a requirement of the job. Random drug and alcohol testing is required to comply with Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.
Physical Demands: Work normally requires finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination to operate computer keyboard at moderate skill level. Work may require occasional or frequent standing, walking and moving about, bending and stooping, bending and twisting, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing, balancing reaching, pushing, pulling, or carrying 50- to 75-pound objects such as tools, equipment and any other work operation requirements. Work involves team lifting of weights above individual limits, and may involve limited sitting and driving for periods.
