Berkeley Lab's Engineering Division has an immediate opening for a Cryogenics Engineer to contribute to specific scientific and engineering programs. The Engineering Division is a matrix organization and supports several projects and programs.
What You Will Do:
In the role as Cryogenic Engineer, you will focus primarily on cryogenic application of thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics and structural engineering to develop leading solutions to scientific and experimental requirements. Your responsibilities will include but not limited to:
Coordinate and actively participate in a multidisciplinary team of engineers, designers and technicians for all aspects of a complex project to satisfy the cryogenic, mechanical, electrical, controls, and instrumentation requirements.
Detailed design, tolerance analysis, cost and schedule planning, specifications development, procurement, and installation of cryogenic equipment.
Thermodynamic and heat transfer analysis including determination of heat loads, head budgets and the development of design and test verification activities on both system and component levels.
Failure Analysis, requirements management, materials and component selection.
Prepare design and analysis reports, and part/assembly drawings for project review.
Serve as a resource for subordinates and peers, effectively provide team leadership, as appropriate, and make innovative contributions to laboratory needs.
What Is Required:
M.Sc. or B.Sc. with equivalent experience, in engineering or related field.
5 years of cryogenic experience applying engineering principles in solving complex problems within thermal/fluid systems.
Demonstrated experience planning, organizing and conducting technical projects/programs and formulating cost and schedule data.
Demonstrated use of analysis tools to solve complex problems. Finite Element Analysis (FEA), and/or Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
Clear communication skills in convey important engineering aspects of project and design.
Ability to provide technical leadership while work within a diverse team of expertise and backgrounds.
Commitment to creative problem solving and teamwork to get things done.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
Software tools: ANSYS APDL, ANSYS Workbench, PTC Creo, MathCAD, CFX.
Experience working with cryostats, cryogen free systems, and cryocoolers.
Experience working with Pressure Vessel Coding requirements.
Experience with heat exchanger, liquefaction or refrigeration systems design.
Hands on experience in performing lab based testing and data collection and the expertise to re-engineer/re-evaluate when necessary.
Solid understanding of fabrication methods and technologies.

Notes: This is a 2 year, term appointment with the possibility of renewal and with the possibility of conversion to career.
