SERVICE AREA OVERVIEW
Northside Hospital is one of the largest and most respected providers of comprehensive cancer services in the Southeast, combining the latest in technology and research with compassionate patient-centered care. Performs and interprets laboratory tests in the Clinical Laboratory for the diagnosis and care of neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Performs laboratory tests, and investigates and troubleshoots test results and/or system failures. 2. Supports departmental QA program by performing and documenting quality control and preventative maintenance. Investigates resolves and documents quality control or instrument maintenance problems. 3. Prepares, monitors, and operates analytical test instruments to ensure that test results are medically reliable. 4. Evaluates patients samples to determine their suitability for examination and/or referral to a reference laboratory. 5. Follows up, or investigates events or situations with specimens which may lead to adverse test outcomes. 6. Performs proficiency testing for intralaboratory comparisons, and to meet regulatory requirements. 7. Provides assistance to Phlebotomists, Data Clerks, and Technicians to include phlebotomy assistance as needed to ensure proper specimen collection, handling, labeling, and processing. 8. Arranges with reference laboratory specimen pick ups and test schedules to ensure adequate support for medical staff. 9. Prepares and reviews test findings and results to be reported to physicians and other medical personnel. 10. Coordinates inventories of supplies and reagents to ensure adequate, economical levels are available. 11. Coordinates schedules, materials, and personnel to assist physicians with special patient procedures, such as bone marrow collection and processing of samples. 12. Practices proper safety techniques in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Immediately reports any mechanical or electrical equipment malfunctions, unsafe conditions, or employee/patient/visitor injury accident to Manager.
Required: 1a. B.S. or B.A. degree in science plus successful completion of a formal technologist training program, program, OR b. B.S. or B.A. degree in science with appropriate credits in chemistry, biology, and mathematics, plus at least one (1) year experience in a clinical laboratory, OR c. Completion of three (3) years academic study (minimum of one hundred thirty five (135) quarter hours or equivalent) with a total of twenty four (24) quarter hours of chemistry, twenty four (24) quarter hours of biological science, and five (5) quarter hours in math. During these three (3) years (one hundred thirty five (135) quarter hours), thirty (30) quarter hours must be at the junior year level or above, and consist of at least fifteen (15) quarter hours of related science work. Must also have two (2) years experience in a clinical laboratory performing technical duties, OR d. Must meet the requirements of a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), have three (3) years MLT experience in a clinical laboratory performing technical duties, including one (1) full year at Northside Hospital., plus have an AS degree in MLT or applied science, and have passed or be eligible to take the AAB (American Association of Bioanalysts) exam. Passing this exam will enable the employee to be a state recognized 5b1 MT. The employee must also demonstrate skills as described in promotion path guidelines (job specific standards). 2.. Have state recognized certification as a Medical Technologist; or be eligible. Must receive certification within 12 months of hire if hired as eligible. 3. Applicants must demonstrate skills as described in the promotion path guidelines. 4. Ability to implement and perform clinical laboratory procedures according to proper standards and regulations. Preferred: 1. Computer keyboard and information system experience. 2. Patient specimen collection experience and patient relations training.
