Job Summary

This position is located in Fremnont, CA.

Under supervision of the UCSF Cardiothoracic Nurse Manager and in collaboration with the Nurse Manager of WHHS the Medical Assistant is guided by policies and procedures of the organization as well as those of Washington Hospital Health System. This position includes a variety of personal care and clinical procedures including assuring positive care outcomes. S/he will perform assigned patient care and laboratory procedures in support of the specialty care services provided to patients within the cardiothoracic surgery practice at Washington Hospital in Fremont. This position is also the principal liaison to the registration, ancillary, surgical, pre-op, patient financial services, and billing departments. This position provides complete new patient registration, arrival, coordination of patient flow, performs clinical functions as well as check out and all follow up scheduling.

General responsibilities include managing patient flow in the practice from new patient referral registration, check-in, through the rooming process and check-out, obtaining vital signs, reviewing health maintenance status, data entry in the electronic medical record, communication with the practice team using the electronic medical record, maintaining and stocking exam rooms, and assisting in emergencies. The Medical Assistant also supports general administrative functions at reception including scheduling, referral management, phone service, visit system data entry and other duties as required. Demonstrates excellent customer service skills with patients and staff. The Medical Assistant must be able to competently work in an advanced Electronic Health Record environment. The Medical Assistant must be able to multi-task any part of the patient visit efficiently and accurately.

The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations is required.

Required Qualifications

* Minimum two years of experience as a Medical Assistant in a high volume clinical practice

* Experience working with cardiology, cardiovascular, cardiac surgery, vascular surgery and adult transplant patient populations

* Certification from an approved Medical Assistant program; or equivalent combination of training and experience

* Active American Heart Association CPR certification

* Knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position

* Strong computer skills, including basic keyboarding skills

* Ability to prioritize and work efficiently with multiple forms of patient & provider communication (e.g. email, phone, voicemail, electronic medical record communication in-basket)

* Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills

* Excellent verbal skills

* Excellent interpersonal skills

* Strong writing skills to include the ability to compose basic office communications

* Ability to deal sensitively and effectively with patients

* Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with all team physicians and referring physicians, nurse practitioners and other providers

* Professional appearance and demeanor

* The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations is required
