JOB DESCRIPTIONAPPLY The Medical Records Abstractor is responsible for manual and electronic data abstraction, report development, and analysis to support the investigation and reporting of Zika virus infections among pregnant women and their fetuses and infants in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state and local health departments. This position is responsible for conducting and augmenting medical record abstraction and disease surveillance activities within local health departments in up to twenty regions across the United States.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties maybe assigned.

Collaborates with Epidemiologists to support the investigation and reporting of Zika virus infections among pregnant women and their fetuses and infants, including Zika virus disease cases with severe clinical manifestations (e.g., congenital infection with microcephaly or other birth defects) to the CDC Birth Defects Surveillance Systems, through manual and electronic data abstraction.
In collaboration with Epidemiologist, assists in coordination of state local public health department visits.
Develops and maintains strong working relationship with state and local health department leadership and staff.
Schedules visits and travels to hospitals, health -related clinics, and offices who have cared for or are caring for women with Zika virus infection during pregnancy or their offspring to review and abstract medical and health-related records of Zika infection.
Medical record abstractions will occur prenatally, at delivery/birth hospitalization, and for surviving children up to three years of age. Data to be abstracted, includes—but is not limited to—the following: (detailed data specifications will be provided)
Prenatal: at case identification, after anatomical ultrasound (22 weeks gestation), or pre-delivery (28-30 weeks gestation)
Delivery/Birth Hospitalization: Abstraction for mother
Delivery/Birth Hospitalization: Abstraction for newborn at birth
Pediatric record review at two months
Pediatric record review at six months
Pediatric record reviews yearly at one, two, and three years of age. Outcomes include growth, neurodevelopmental delays, vision concerns, hearing concerns, and other comorbidities. Data sources are pediatric provider medical/health-care records, birth defects and neonatal screening program records.
Provides suggestions to improve surveillance efforts based on the individual local health department's needs, capabilities and limitations in order to drive public health action.
Supports reporting of clinical data for all eligible cases that meet US Zika Pregnancy Registry case definition, including pregnant women in the U.S. with laboratory evidence of Zika virus (positive or inconclusive tests Zika virus tests regardless of whether they have symptoms) and prenatally or exposed infants born to these women, as well as infants with laboratory evidence of congenital Zika virus infection (positive of inconclusive test results, regardless of whether they have symptoms) and the retrospective inclusion of their mothers in the registry.
In coordination with epidemiology staff, completes and transmits securely and in a timely manner, U.S, Zika Pregnancy Registry forms for maternal and infant follow up, including but not limited to registry data elements in the format required for the registry unless state law forbids transmission of certain Registry data elements.
Reviews medical record abstraction data and contributes to assurance of data accuracy, quality, completeness and development of surveillance reports.
Maintains knowledge of and ensures compliance with all policies and regulatory requirements.
Serves as a resource to state and local health departments and team members at the national, state and local levels.
Training of new or more junior staff will be expected over time.
Travels more than 50% of the time unless site visits conducted are local.
Responsible for aiding in own self-development by being available and receptive to any training made available by the company.
Plans daily activities within the guidelines of company policy, job description and supervisor's instruction in such a way as to maximize output.
Responsible for keeping own immediate work area in a neat and orderly condition to ensure safety of self and coworkers. Will report any unsafe conditions and/or practices to the appropriate supervisor and Human Resources. Will immediately correct any unsafe conditions as the best of own ability.
Bachelor's degree in public health, health services or a related field and a minimum of three years relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education / experience. Experience with health care data analytical techniques is preferred. R.N. is preferred. Proficiency in a second language is a plus.

Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
