Job Description:

Job Description: Microsystems Thermal Engineer supporting the Electronics and Radio Frequency Division within the Army Research Laboratory (ARL), Sensors and Electron Devices Directorate (SEDD) in Adelphi, MD. This position is for one full-time, on-site engineer / scientist to perform thermal modeling, design and optimization of sub-millimeter scale multilayer cantilever and other structures for microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) applications as well as design and implementation of standard heat removal approaches for demonstrations and prototypes involving electronics cooling. Primary responsibilities Perform finite element analysis (FEA) using ANSYS or FEA methods adapted from other commercial codes to ANSYS to predict behavior of sub-millimeter scale cantilever and other structures for MEMs applications involving structures heated with optical sources such as lasers, pyrotechnics, and/or other environmental sources of heat. Apply analytical heat transfer or thermodynamic relationships and equations for basic geometries to validate FEA models and guide design and optimization of MEMS structures including multilayer stacks of metals, dielectrics, and/or shape memory alloys. Identify and carry out modeling approaches to determine thermomechanical properties from test structures including thermal conductivity, specific heat capacity, and thermal expansion coefficients of single- or multi-layer structures. Advise, collaborate, and participate in mask and process design requiring knowledge of MEMS and semiconductor fabrication processes and equipment such as photolithography, sputter deposition, atomic layer deposition, plasma etching, wet etching and ion milling. Model, design and procure standard electronics cooling components for demonstrations and prototypes involving electronics cooling.
