Reports to Nursing Manager of 7west, Dept. of Nursing. Consultation and supervision is provided to the Cardiothoracic NP by the attending physician and/or designee during the patient care management component of the role. The NP directs the health care management of the Cardiothoracic patients and provides emergency care. Also functions independently with other health care team members and departments to provide optimum care to his/her patients. The NP shall provide supervision of training nurse practitioners, students, consults with other health team members caring for Cardiothoracic service patients at their request and shall participate in research. Advises family, initiates referrals based on family needs. Provides formal and informal in-service education for staff and conducts clinic patient assessments and manages visit along with providing proper documentation. The NP conducts QA review of selected aspects of the Cardiothoracic service.

The NP functions in an interdependent role by implementing the appropriate standardized procedures (SP). By using the SPs the NP is able to change treatment regimen after observing signs and symptoms of illness, reactions to treatment, general behavior and physical condition, and determines if they are abnormal findings (Ca Nursing Practice Act, subsection(b) of Section 2725). Provide and coordinate the care of cardio-thoracic ICU patients, provide patient/family education, promote safe continuity of care. Participate in interdisciplinary and clinical rounds, provide education and support as well as make appropriate referrals. Document services rendered.


A registered professional nurse with clinical expertise in CT Nursing who has completed a formal educational program, which includes supervised clinical experience in the management of Cardiothoracic patients and their families. Successful completion of a Master's Degree in nurse practitioner program.

NP I less than 6 months of NP experience
NP II 6months or greater of NP experienceAbility to utilize excel, word and other software programs. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and collaborative working relationships with administrative, clinical and academic personnel. Skill in working independently and following through with minimum directions

Ability to set priorities. Demonstrate writing skills to compose logical, detailed and grammatically correct correspondence

Document patient care in an concise and comprehensive manner. Required: valid CA BRN license; NP and ACLS certifications;
