GENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT: Summarize the nature and level of work performed.

The Registered Nurse provides, and is accountable for, patient care according to the philosophy and standards of the Department of Nursing. The RN utilizes appropriate clinical skills to integrate and implement the nursing process with the plan of care. Functions as a clinical resource for the patient, consistently providing direction and support to ensure a focus on the team goals and patient driven outcomes. Functions within the role expectations of his/her area, delegates duties to other caregivers as required and consistently provides appropriate supervision.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Indicate key areas of responsibility, major job duties, special projects and key objectives for this position. These items should be evaluated throughout the year and included in the written annual evaluation.

Care Delivery

1. Possesses the specialized knowledge and skills necessary to provide care for people with disability and chronic illness and to implement physician orders, nursing interventions and procedures according to policy.

2. Performs hands on care by utilizing the nursing process to achieve quality outcomes for patients.

3. Coordinates nursing care activities in collaboration with other members of the interdisciplinary team to facilitate achievement of patient goals.

4. Provides direction, supervision and is accountable for ancillary staff nursing personnel, demonstrates professional judgment, uses problem solving techniques and time management principles, and delegates appropriately.

5. Completes nursing assessment accurately and timely in accordance with practice standards.

6. Develops and implements Plan of Care reflecting the needs and goals of the patient.

7. Evaluates the nursing care provided and modifies the plan, as needed, to achieve goals and objectives.

8. Documentation is consistently complete, accurate, timely and legible according to departmental policies and procedures.

9. Medications are administered safely according to professional standards of practice and nursing policies and procedures.

Teaching/Education

1. Assesses and documents education about the disease process, underlying disability and teaches nursing techniques to help the patients and families develop self-care skills necessary to move toward wellness.

2. Provide mentoring and teaching for healthcare team members regarding nursing rehabilitation practice.

3. Seeks out opportunities for own learning and ongoing professional development and shares this knowledge with co-workers.

4. Acts as a resource and a role model for nursing staff and students and participates in activities such as committees and professional organizations.

5. Completes mandatory education/competency testing.

Collaboration

1. Participates in the interdisciplinary team process at team conferences and other team meetings and offers input into team decision making.

QUALIFICATIONS: (must be realistic, neither overstated nor understated, and related to the essential functions of the job.)

1. Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.

2. Current licensure from the Massachusetts Board of Registration to practice professional nursing.

3. Bachelor of Science in Nursing desirable.
