Heart to Heart: For Girls Only curriculum, a class on puberty for kids 10-12 years of age and their parents.

Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford is the heart and soul of Stanford Children s Health. Nationally ranked and internationally recognized, our 311-bed hospital is devoted entirely to pediatrics and obstetrics. Our six centers of excellence provide comprehensive services and deep expertise in key obstetric and pediatric areas: brain & behavior, cancer, heart, pregnancy & newborn, pulmonary and transplant. We also provide an additional, wide range of services for babies, kids and pregnant moms.

The Professional Community Teacher is trained to teach in the variety of programs we offer in this department. This position sets up, teaches and evaluates curriculum, meets with families, both adults and children, establishes positive relationships between the hospital and the community through the vehicle of community education.

The Heart to Heart program for girls consists of classes for pre-teen girls, ages 10-12 to attend with their moms (or other adult resources) to learn about puberty and growing up. The classes cover a broad range of topics such as body changes for girls during puberty and those for boys during this time, myths and facts, sexuality, how a baby is made, making good decisions, and knowing your resources. We stress the importance of the parent as a primary resource for the child s questions or concerns while honoring the individual values and traditions of each family. More information can be found on our website at

The classes are two hours in length each typically held over two weekday evenings. The instructor position requires someone who can relate well with youth and with adults and who can discuss the topics above in a frank and open manner --- the curriculum is fun, involving role-playing games and often personalized with stories from the different instructors. Humor is used very effectively to put everyone at ease. The ideal instructor will have experience with public speaking to large groups as the classes are often held for 30-50 pairs. We are licensed to teach the curriculum from Great Conversations ( in Seattle. You can see sample videos of the classes on their website. We currently hold our classes in San Francisco, Belmont, Morgan Hill, Campbell, Menlo Park and at Stanford.
