DUTIES:Back to top An advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) has prescriptive authority and provides care for an identified patient panel in collaboration with a physician. Core functions of a NP include diagnosing and treating acute and chronic health care problems, performing adult care check ups, and prescribing medication and treatments. Diagnoses and manages minor trauma including suturing. Teaches health promotion and disease prevention to patients. As a member of a dynamic profession in a rapidly changing health care environment, the NP mustbase practice on current and anticipated trends in health care and be committed to lifelong professional growth and learning. The NP provides quality care that meets national, VISN, VHA, and specialist society requirements and serves as a health care resource, interdisciplinary consultant, and patient advocate.
