Department Description

The Cardiothoracic Surgery program at UCSF was established 50 years ago when then Department of Surgery Chair, Leon Goldman, M.D., father of U.S. Senator Diane Feinstein, invited Benson Roe, M.D. to join the faculty and establish a division for a new subspecialty, Cardiothoracic Surgery. Dr. Roe's pioneering work continues today through the leadership of Cardiothoracic Surgery Chief, Scot Merrick, M.D.

The Division of Adult Cardiothoracic Surgery at UCSF is comprised of a Cardiac Surgery Section, a General Thoracic Surgery section, a Heart and Lung Transplant Program, which has historically had high one-year survival outcomes among academic surgery programs nationally and a Mechanical Circulatory Service (MCS) team that provides care and treatment for patients on Ventricular Assist Devices (VADs) and Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO).

The Division has a fully accredited ACGME training program in cardiothoracic surgery that consists of rotations in adult and pediatric cardiac surgery, and thoracic surgery, many of whom have gone on to become distinguished leaders in their field.
