The Department of Nutrition & Food Services has two major divisions: nutrition services and food services. The Department provides professional nutrition services and food to patients in the hospitals and clinics at Parnassus and Mount Zion sites. It is also operates a retail cafeteria at Parnassus and provides a full range of catering services to the Medical Center, Mount Zion, Mission Bay, campus, and the surrounding community.
Under the supervision of the RD, the Nutrition Assistant provides nutrition care for patients according to established standards in the assigned area. Nutrition care involves assisting with menu planning to meet nutritional needs within the limits of the diet order.
The Nutrition Assistant is responsible for assisting patients with the menu selection process, monitoring tolerance to diet, coordinating the provision of nutrition care, and documenting care provided, under the day-to-day supervision of the Registered Dietitian and general supervision of the RD supervisor.
The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations is required.

* Demonstrates an understanding of and adheres to privacy, confidentiality, and security policies and procedures related to Protected Health Information (PHI) or other sensitive and personal information.
* Demonstrates an understanding of and adheres to safety and infection control policies and procedures.
* Assumes accountability for improving quality metrics associated with department/unit and meeting organizational/departmental targets.
* Keeps working areas neat, orderly and clutter-free, including the hallways. Adheres to cleaning processes and puts things back where they belong. Removes and reports broken equipment and furniture.
* Picks up and disposes of any litter found throughout entire facility.
* Posts flyers and posters in designated areas only; does not post on walls, doors or windows.
* Knows where the Environment of Care Manual is kept in department; corrects or reports unsafe conditions to the appropriate departments.
* Protects the physical environment and equipment from damage and theft.
* AA or Bachelors degree in nutrition and dietetics
* Dietetic Technician, Registered credential with maintenance of continuing education needed to maintain DTR credential
* Academic & applied background in clinical nutrition
* Good written and verbal communication skills; to understand and be understood in English
* Ability to work productively with people who have both similar and different backgrounds
* Accurate in interpretation of data and in planning for nutrition care
* Organization skills and ability to accomplish assigned work within time constraints
* Ability to adapt to changes in work duties and hours and days of work, including work on weekends and holidays
* Experience with using computers for daily tasks and communication
* The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations is required
* Work experience including direct patient contact in a hospital, skilled nursing facility or other clinical setting
* DTR (Dietetic Technician, Registered)
