EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
High school diploma, current BLCS, at least one (1) year of related hospital experience, and successful completion of internal skills assessment within one month orientation period. Anesthesia Technician Certification preferred.
Assists during induction and sets up general anesthesia cases. Maintains and calibrates monitoring equipment. Follows standards of aseptic technique. Prepares and sets-up special equipment based on individual patient needs. Prepares for and assists with patient transport. Provides technical and support services.
Assists with set-up and placement of invasive monitoring lines and dressing application-IV, arterial, central line, PA catheter. Washes hands, dons gloves. Sets-up transducer and validates expiration date. Gathers and organizes supplies. Flushes transducer line and checks pressure lines. Preps insertion site and assists with line placement. Secures site, applies dressing using sterile technique.
Performs daily care and routine maintenance of anesthesia related equipment and reports all safety hazards. Inspects for damage and wear, pipelines supply of gases, cylinder gas pressures. Confirms nitrous oxide flow shuts off. Checks battery indicator, breathing circuit for leaks, insures working order of APL valve, scavenging system leaks and dust caps for cleanliness. Inspects vaporizer fluid levels, turns on ventilator and observes for free movement of bellows.
Ensures proper operation of anesthesia monitoring equipment. Cleans machine daily with disinfectant solution and spot cleans as necessary. Inspects respirometer for cleanliness and lubrication. Calibrates oxygen sensor capsule, turns on suction, verifies location, cleaniness, and operation of intubation equipment on cart.
Performs blood gas assessment by obtaining specimen. Enters identification number and password. Enters patient identification number and discards specimen in biohazard container. Distributes results to Operating Room and lab.
Performs room decontamination procedures. Discards disposable items such as, circuit, ECG pads, pulse ox probes, oral airways, ET tubes, bite blocks, esophageal probes, nasogastric tubes, CO2 sample line. Wipes down cables and surfaces such as ECG, blood pressure, pulse ox, temperature, pressure, machine, cart. Replaces all disposable items, discards trash and replaces bags. Checks monitors, sets-up anesthesia cart for follow case and completes charges.
Cleans and processes anesthesia equipment according to manufacturer's instructions. Orders and stocks essential anesthesia supplies. Organizes and prioritizes anesthesia tasks based on identified need. Monitors and stocks oxygen tanks.
Serves as professional and technical subject matter expert and resource person. Demonstrates competency to operate anesthesia related equipment and supplies. Serves as preceptor to new staff and complete written clinical performance evaluation form in timely manner. Follows established departmental policies and procedures and participates in departmental quality assessment and improvement activities. Performs anesthesia duties in manner that is cost effective without compromising quality patient care.
