Department: Surgical Services
As a member of the perioperative healthcare team, the surgical tech provides technical assistance to surgeons in the operating room. The surgical tech supports the surgeon during the surgical procedure by providing instrumentation and assistance as well as being responsible for utilizing the nursing process in collaboration with the RN. The surgical tech effectively interacts with other disciplines to coordinate the patient s care while in the surgical environment. The surgical tech must demonstrate ability to implement a plan for specific surgical cases and is responsible with the RN for accurate counts and creating/maintaining sterile fields. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES:1.Demonstrates knowledge and competency in operating room standards, policies and procedures to ensure safe patient care.2.Strictly adheres to hospital and departmental policies, procedures, and duties.3.Demonstrates positive communication and skills by listening to others and providing clear, accurate information to other health care workers.4.Selects and prepares necessary supplies and equipment.5.Checks all equipment and reports or corrects unsafe conditions prior to placing on the sterile field.6.Verifies exposure to sterilization process and integrity of sterile packaging.7.Opens supplies aseptically.8.Displays dexterity in the use of surgical instruments throughout the procedure.9.Prepares and knows the specific use of surgical instruments the procedure.10. Differentiates between contaminated and clean/sterile areas.11. Replenishes necessary supplies and equipment.12. Performs other related duties as assigned.WORKING CONDITIONS, HAZARDS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT: Long periods of standing, walking, stooping, heavy lifting and bending are required. May experience exposure to disease, infection, physical strain and/or hazardous materials. Must be able to lift 50 lb. independently.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR EQUIVALENTS:Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Ability to speak English.Experience: Demonstrated competence in the clinical setting. LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND/OR REGISTRATIONS:Completion of an approved OR technician course or previous experience as a scrub tech. Flex 1st
