The University of California is creating a dynamic new university campus and campus community in Merced, California, which opened in September 2005 as the tenth campus of the University of California and the first American research university built in the 21st century. In keeping with the mission of the University to provide teaching, research and public service of the highest quality, UC Merced will be providing new educational opportunities at the undergraduate, masters and doctoral levels through three academic schools Engineering; Natural Sciences; and, Social Sciences, Humanities and the Arts.
The School of Engineering is proud of its faculty s accomplishments and rapid growth. Over the past five years, undergraduate and graduate enrollments have grown by 65 percent. The School currently has 43 faculty members, 1,400 undergraduates and over 140 graduate students. The campus opened a new Science and Engineering Building in 2014 and will begin to undertake a massive building program that will more than double the campus building areas beginning in 2017.
The Mechanical Engineering (ME) program at the University of California, Merced invites applications for one open rank tenured or tenure-track position. Applications are especially encouraged from individuals with research interest in the general area of thermal-fluid sciences. This includes (but is not limited to) reacting flows, RANS/LES/DNS, thermo-fluids based energy generation or storage processes, thermal transport or lubricating fluids, radiative heat transfer, heat transfer at extreme conditions, heat transfer in advanced manufacturing and materials processing, solar thermal energy and reactors, energy efficient processes based on thermodynamics and heat transfer, or thermal management. However, other areas of mechanical engineering will be considered.
We anticipate that the successful applicants will complement the highly motivated and entrepreneurial spirit of the School faculty, contributing meaningfully to the success of future teaching, research, and service accomplishments. Faculty research activities are essential to the success of our program and as such new members are expected to initiate and sustain strong sponsored research and graduate training programs.
Qualifications: A doctoral degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related field (as indicated above) is required at time of employment. Applicants should have a distinguished academic record, an exceptional potential to conduct world-class research in a collaborative environment, and a strong commitment to teaching mechanical engineering subject matter at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
