Position Overview
The Department of French & Italian at the University of Kansas seeks individuals qualified to teach part- to full-time undergraduate courses in Italian. The departmental Lecturer pool is renewed every year. We accept applications at any time, and make appointments in mid-to-late spring semester for the following academic year (or at other times when teachers are needed to fill unexpected vacancies). The successful applicant for the position must have appropriate authorization to work in the U.S. before employment begins.

Starting Date: August 18th for fall semester; January 1st for spring semester appointments.

Length of Appointment: One semester or one academic year. Renewable based on satisfactory performance of duties and departmental needs.

Job Description
100% Teach one to four 3-hour or 5-hour courses at the 100-, 200-, 300-, or 400-level.


* Prepare for and attend all class meetings. In case of absence, the lecturer must make arrangements for a substitute to teach class. Classes should not be canceled.

* Develop assignments, administer tests, evaluate student work, provide feedback to students, and assign grades.

* Hold regular office hours for students involved in classes taught. A minimum of three posted office hours each week is required. These office hours should be divided over at least two and preferably three different days. The lecturer should be available for reasonable appointments if a student cannot meet during scheduled office hours.

* Adhere to departmental, college and university policies.

Required Qualifications
Evaluation of the following requirements will be made through (1) descriptions of work experience and educational experiences in letter of application, (2) record of accomplishments and productivity addressed in resume, (3) information provided from professional references, and (4) information provided in course evaluations when available:

For those hired to teach at the 100- or 200-level:
1. Bachelor's level study (or foreign equivalent) in Italian, or related arts or humanities discipline;
2. Near-native or native command of Italian.

For those hired to teach at the 300- or 400-level:
1. M.A. plus additional graduate study in Italian (or foreign equivalent);
2. Demonstrated excellence in teaching as evidenced by evaluations and/or letters of recommendation;
3. Near-native or native command of Italian.

Preferred Qualifications
For those hired to teach 100- or 200-level course(s):
1. Previous experience teaching the course(s) of interest;
2. Demonstrated excellence in teaching as evidenced in evaluations or letters of recommendation.

For those hired to teach 300- or 400-level course(s):
1. Ph.D. or A.B.D.;
2. Previous experience teaching the course(s) of interest;
3. Demonstrated excellence in teaching as evidenced in evaluations or letters of recommendation.
