Department: Patient Unit - Hematology/ Oncology/BMT


GENERAL SUMMARYResponsible for performing basic supportive care to specified patients/families under the direction and supervision of a Staff RN. Demonstrates competence in providing age-appropriate care and service for pediatric patients from birth to 21 years, and selected adults. Delivers excellent customer service in all encounters. PCA duties include but are not limited to taking vital signs, heights and weights. Provides basic supportive care such as bed making/keep patient room clean and orderly. Nutrition as indicated. Provides comfort measures, i.e. pillows, blankets, privacy. Performs the following procedures: Specimen collection: (urine for urinalysis and culture, blood by capillary puncture). Applies infant specimen collection device. Obtains clean catch urine. Simple (clean/non-sterile) dressing changes: Holds, positions patient and assists with procedures (examples: IV insertion). Observes and reports appearance of peripheral IV site. Transports patients to other departments/areas of the hospital. Documents all data collected and care provided on the appropriate paper or electronic form of the patient record. Maintains up to date patient information on tracking system. Responsibilities& accountable for: appropriate time and resource management; accepts delegation from Staff RN.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1. High school graduate or equivalent GED.
2. State Tested Nursing Assistant strongly preferred OR one year of comparable experience in a hospital setting within the past 3 years. Nursing students can qualify if they have successfully completed the fundamentals of nursing course(s) of an approved college/school program and have completed two clinical rotations with the exception of Long Term Care or Psych.
3. Good written and verbal communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
4. Neat appearance, good grooming and professional manner.
5. Completion of orientation classes offered by Nationwide Children s Hospital, Inc., the Department of Professional development and unit/area.
6. Must demonstrate competence as defined in the Patient Care Assistant responsibilities/skills checklist in providing age appropriate care and services to pediatric patients of all ages and selected adult patients.
7. CPR trained (American Heart Association CPR for Family and Friends) course or Health Care Provider course or Red Cross equivalent preferred.
8. Must successfully pass PCA pre-test.

MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Must be able to see, hear, stand, walk, speak, read, and perform basic math calculations (add, subtract, multiply and divide) and successfully pass Patient Care Assistant pre-test and has satisfactory data entry scores.
