Responsibilities
SPAULDING HOSPITAL CAMBRIDGE
POSITION DESCRIPTION
I. POSITION TITLE: Medical Technologist
DEPARTMENT: Clinical Laboratory
REPORTS TO: Laboratory Technical Supervisor/Lab Manager
RESPONSIBLE FOR SUPERIVION OF: N/A
AGE SPECIFICATION: Must have knowledge and demonstrate ability to treat the adult and/or geriatric patient population.
DEFINITION AND AUTHORITY: Performs a variety of routine and complex tests on clinical specimens for the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of disease.
QUALIFICATIONS: Baccalaureate degree with major in Medical Technologist. Registration as a Medical Technologist by ASCP, HEW or NCA Certification or equivalent.
IV. *PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
May necessitate prolonged sitting or standing.
Must be able to bend and reach for phlebotomy and EKG duties.
Requires: corrected vision and hearing to normal range or use prosthetics which will enable her/him to function adequately in accordance with job responsibilities.
Must be able to pass colorblindness test for microscopy procedures.
Ability to lift a minimum of 20 pounds.
Must be able to relate to and work with the chronically ill and/or disabled; brain damaged adult and/or elderly.
Must be able to speak, write and understand the English language to facilitate effective communication with patients, families and visitors.
Motor coordination demonstrated through the performance of technical procedures in accordance with established standards. Must possess high degree of manual dexterity.
Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
Ability to adapt to a changing situation or environment.
Requires use of office equipment such as computers, copiers and telephones.
Must be able to perform all computer tasks with speed and accuracy.
V. *ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:
Constant exposure to body fluids, infectious diseases and biohazardous materials.
Must adhere to established guidelines for handing these materials.
VI. MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST RESPONSIBILITIES AND COMPETENCIES
POSITION SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES
1. PHLEBOTOMY AND EKG DUTIES:
a. *Collects blood specimens and performs EKGs in accordance with departmental procedures. Demonstrates ability in adult and geriatric phlebotomy.
2. LABORATORY TESTING AND QUALITY CONTROL(QC)
a. *Performs a variety of routine and complex testing following established policies and procedures.
b. *Performs high quality work with speed and accuracy. Organizes workload and performs several tasks simultaneously to expedite patient results.
c. *Following established protocols, conducts performance checks, maintenance, evaluation of QC measures, implements corrective action when indicated and documents such action prior to patient testing.
d. Assists in the training of new personnel.
e. *Properly prepares specimens for transport to reference laboratories.
f. *Assumes responsibility when the Sr, Tech/T. Supervisor is unavailable.
3. *MEDITECH COMPETENCY:
a. Performs Meditech procedures in a timely and accurate manner.
B. COMMUNICATION:

Completes written documentation adequately:
