The Pharmacy Technician shall provide assistance to the pharmacist while under direct supervision. Responsibilities include filling Pyxis machines, unit dose carts, floorstock requests, new orders from labels generated and crash cart trays; admitting, transferring and discharging patient drugs and IVs; keying patient charges; delivering drugs and supplies; prepackaging unit dose drugs; managing drug and supply inventory; clerical duties; IV preparation.
Manages Pyxis stock as outlined in policy.
Fills stock outs and stock critical lows within time allotted.
Processes return bins according to schedule and as needed (if more frequent).
Enters expiration dates accurately into Pyxis when refilling or loading medication.
Refills drug pockets accurately -- following all SALAD, High Alert protocols.
Refills controlled drugs accurately and resolves any discrepancies at the end of shift before leaving.
Pends and fills medications from Meds not loaded report.
Assists the pharmacist with drug dispensing necessary for good patient care.
Fills new orders, refills, and re-dispenses in a timely manner from the labels generated by pharmacists and leaves such to be checked by a pharmacist.
Fills floorstock requests to be checked by a pharmacist.
Prepackages unit dose drugs using proper technique.
Generates computer labels for prepackaged unit dose drugs.
Quarantines drugs for Pharmacist check.
Capable of operating Taylst, Medidose, MPI Autoprint, Wasp Labeler, and other packaging equipment and software.
Ensures all drugs delivered to nursing units are properly Bar Coded.
Delivers drugs and supplies.
Makes timely rounds to each nursing unit and accurately delivers drugs to the proper place as needed.
Identifies and returns unused IV solutions and drug stock on nursing units during rounds and delivery runs.
Uses the dumbwaiter and pneumatic tube efficiently and timely.
Restocks pharmacy areas and nursing units with proper stock at the proper level.
Maintains Pharmacy Inventory -- Enters Drugs on Want Book.
Checks pharmacy areas for expired drugs.
Keys charges for Surgery Boxes, Surgery Fluid Charge Sheets, miscellaneous boxes and charge & replace tickets.
Keys credits for discontinued drugs and IVs.
Disposes of boxes, trash, and hazardous waste appropriately and leaves a clean environment.
Medication Area Inspections (Expired Meds/Pyxis Expires/Unsecured Medication)
Assists the pharmacists with IV tasks. (Tech II & III only)
Complies with 797 standards.
Prepares IV admixtures accurately using established procedures and safety equipment provided under the supervision of a pharmacist.
Makes IV rounds and investigates any related issues.
Monitors and maintains sufficient sterile compounded supplies.
Plans, controls, and maintains drug and supply inventory.
Restocks IV room appropriately.
Computer skills beneficial.
One year experience preferred. Hospital experience desired.
Licenses, Registrations or Certifications
Pharmacy Tech I: No certification. Permit by the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy.
Pharmacy Tech II: Certified by the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy in good standing.
Pharmacy Tech III: Certified by the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy in good standing & IV Competent
