The University of California, Merced is the newest and tenth campus of the University of California system and the first American research university built in the 21st century. A UC Merced Police Officer protects life and property, enforces law, and performs other duties typical of police officers in general law enforcement agencies. Officers patrol the UC Merced Campus sites in Merced and Atwater in patrol cars, on bicycles, and on foot. The Police Department uses a Community Oriented Policing philosophy and is dedicated to community service.

Respond to calls related to the protection of life and property, traffic collisions, and other required emergencies; initiate police action when necessary; prevent and suppress crime; investigate missing persons, and make arrests and search, fingerprint, and transport prisoners; conduct preliminary and follow-up investigations of criminal incidents, disturbances, hazardous incidents, vehicle collisions, casualties; enforce federal and state laws, and University regulations; collect and preserve evidence and found property; interrogate suspects and interview victims, complainants, and witnesses; check buildings for physical security; direct traffic and write traffic citations; prepare written and computer-generated reports; work closely with the public and University units to identify and solve community problems; make presentations to citizens and groups; participate in on-going training; prepare cases and testify in court; execute assigned duties pursuant to University and Police policy and procedures. The Police Officer will work rotating shifts as assigned, work on the properties/events owned/operated by UC Merced and may be assigned to work on other properties/events owned/operated by the University of California.


Possess a U.S. High School diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor s degree is preferred.

21 years of age or older preferred.

Be a US citizen, or have applied for citizenship and achieve citizenship within three years from the date of appointment as a peace officer with this department.

Possess a California Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) Academy Certificate; A POST basic certificate or higher is preferred.

Pass an extensive POST background investigation, medical evaluation, and psychological examination.

Be legally able to possess a firearm.

Possess a CA driver s license and participate in the DMV Pull Notice Program.
