Postdoctoral Associate, Chemical Biology Program

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY

Joins the Learning from Human Genetics initiative aimed at integrating findings from human disease genetics with novel approaches in functional genomics and chemical biology to make progress toward treatments for Crohn's Disease and Type I Diabetes. As a member of the initiative, extensively interacts with the team of immunologists and molecular biologists that are performing functional genomics assays with the goal of identifying cellular pathways relevant to disease. As a member of the Chemical Biology Program, establishes and performs primary and secondary assays aimed at the development and optimization of small molecule probe compounds for disease-relevant pathways. Works together with the assay development and screening teams and closely collaborates with chemists to enable iterative rounds of compound testing and optimization.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES

- Responsible for the specification, implementation and validation of assays for high-throughput screening and secondary assays aiming at the development of chemical probes.
- Works independently to design and execute research projects; plans, schedules, or coordinates the development of chemical probe compounds for targets of interest. Ensures that critical project requirements, timelines and deliverables are met.
- Performs detailed characterization of hits and chemically optimized compound using biochemistry and enzymology based on previously demonstrated success and technical proficiency in these areas.
- Determines the feasibility and makes recommendations regarding the acquisition and/or implementation of new technologies, reagents and assay procedures.
- Uses demonstrated scientific creativity, collaboration with others and independent thought to expand technical capabilities and identify new research opportunities.
- Regularly presents data at meetings, participates in external activities, and technical meetings.
Requirements:
- Ph.D. in immunology, cell biology or biochemistry. Background in autoimmune or metabolic disorders strongly preferred.
- Solid experience in the development and utilization of biochemical assays and/or cell based assays.
- Experience working with primary cells and mouse disease models a plus.
- Strong publication record and excellent communication skills.
- Excellent organization and time management skills required.
- Must be able to use sound judgment to handle a variety of tasks and to shift priorities simultaneously, as well as to effectively solve problems.
- Basic knowledge of computer applications required and experience with large data sets and analysis of HTS data a plus.
