THE COMPUTER SCIENCE (CS) DEPARTMENT IN THE COMPUTATIONAL RESEARCH DIVISION (CRD.LBL.GOV) IS LOOKING FOR TALENTED AND MOTIVATED POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWS TO BECOME PART OF OUR TEAM WORKING ON EXCITING SCIENCE RESEARCH PROJECTS. RESEARCHERS IN COMPUTER AND DATA SCIENCE OR ANY RELEVANT COMPUTATIONAL SCIENCE DISCIPLINE WHO HAVE RECEIVED THEIR PH.D. WITHIN THE LAST THREE YEARS ARE ENCOURAGED TO APPLY. THE CS DEPARTMENT PERFORMS INNOVATIVE RESEARCH THAT ENHANCES HIGH PERFORMANCE COMPUTATIONAL SCIENCE APPLICATION CODES USED IN SCIENTIFIC DISCOVERY ACROSS A BROAD RANGE OF SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINES. MEMBERS OF THE DEPARTMENT COLLABORATE BROADLY ACROSS BERKELEY LAB, THE DOE NATIONAL LABORATORY COMMUNITY, AND WITH ACADEMIC, GOVERNMENT AND INDUSTRIAL INSTITUTIONS INTERNATIONALLY TO ENABLE BREAKTHROUGH SCIENTIFIC DISCOVERIES THAT MAKE ESSENTIAL USE OF HIGH-PERFORMANCE COMPUTING CAPABILITIES. CURRENT RESEARCH AREAS INCLUDE ADVANCED PROGRAMMING SYSTEMS, PARALLEL LANGUAGES, COMPUTER ARCHITECTURE, ADVANCED OPERATING SYSTEMS AND RUNTIMES, BENCHMARKING AND PERFORMANCE MODELING, PERFORMANCE OPTIMIZATION, AND ADVANCED ALGORITHM DEVELOPMENT. THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT WILL BE PART OF ONE OF THE MULTI-DISCIPLINARY TEAMS IN THE DEPARTMENT WORKING ON A WIDE ARRAY OF RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT PROJECT AND WILL JOIN ONE OF THE THREE CS GROUPS. THESE GROUPS AND THEIR MISSION/FOCUS ARE LISTED BELOW:

THE PERFORMANCE AND ALGORITHMS RESEARCH GROUP (PAR) FOCUSES ON THE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF TECHNOLOGIES AND ALGORITHMS THAT ENHANCE THE PERFORMANCE, SCALABILITY, AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY OF APPLICATIONS RUNNING ON THE DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY\'S MULTICORE-, MANYCORE-, AND ACCELERATOR-BASED SUPERCOMPUTERS. MOREOVER, PAR DEVELOP PERFORMANCE MODELS TO UNDERSTAND THE INHERENT BOTTLENECKS IN TODAY\'S SYSTEMS AS WELL AS PREDICT THE PERFORMANCE AND BOTTLENECKS OF TOMORROW\'S EXASCALE SYSTEMS. TO THAT END, WE HAVE FORMED STRONG RESEARCH COLLABORATIONS WITH COMPUTER SCIENCE, COMPUTER ARCHITECTURE, APPLIED MATH, AND APPLICATION RESEARCH TEAMS. THE COMPUTER ARCHITECTURE LABORATORY (CAL) AND ASSOCIATED ARCHITECTURE GROUP ADVANCES EXASCALE DESIGN SPACE EXPLORATION TO DEVELOP ENERGY EFFICIENT AND EFFECTIVE PROCESSOR AND MEMORY ARCHITECTURE R&D FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY\'S EXASCALE PROGRAM. THE GROUPS MISSION IS TO RESEARCH, DESIGN, AND IMPLEMENT NEW ARCHITECTURAL SIMULATION CAPABILITIES, NOVEL HARDWARE ARCHITECTURE FEATURES, ASSESS DESIGN TRADE-OFFS, AND FACILITATE THE CO-DESIGN PROCESS FOR LEADING-EDGE HIGH PERFORMANCE COMPUTING (HPC) SYSTEMS. THE PRIMARY PROJECT OF THIS GROUP IS THE COMPUTER ARCHITECTURE LABORATORY (HTTP://WWW.CAL-DESIGN.ORG), WHICH IS MULTI-LABORATORY ACTIVITY INVOLVING SANDIA NATIONAL LABORATORIES AND LAWRENCE BERKELEY NATIONAL LABORATORY. THE COMPUTER LANGUAGES AND SYSTEM SOFTWARE (CLASS) GROUPS MISSION IS TO RESEARCH, DESIGN, AND IMPLEMENT NEW MODELS, FEATURES AND OPTIMIZATIONS OF PARALLEL PROGRAMMING LANGUAGES AND THEIR EXECUTION ENVIRONMENTS FOR LEADING-EDGE HIGH PERFORMANCE COMPUTING (HPC) SYSTEMS.
