Position Summary:

Berkeley Labs Biological Systems and Engineering division has an exciting Postdoctoral Fellow opportunity in the area of human mammary epithelial cell (HMEC) biology. You will be involved with a project on the role of breast cancer driver genes in breast cancer susceptibility, using an in vitro model of breast cancer transformation and progression, and in administration of an HMEC Bank.

Specific Responsibilities:


Develop and analyze cell strains and cell lines expressing identified driver genes/mutations.

Assess the roles of putative drivers at different stages of malignant progression.

Maintain accurate records of cell culture development.

Administer HMEC Bank database of frozen specimens.

Gain knowledge of HMEC Bank administration.

Interact with other researchers to provide frozen specimens or live cultures as needed.

Analyze and summarize data and present findings at internal lab meetings and scientific conferences.

Develop and coordinate experimental studies derived from this work with outside collaborators.

Publish in peer-reviewed journals and contribute to scientific research papers and reports.

Required Qualifications:


Ph.D. in biology, cell/molecular biology, genetics, genomics, computational biology or a relevant related field.

Solid understanding of general cell biology and cancer progression.

Experience with in vitro studies and mammalian tissue culture.

Practice with molecular biology techniques, such as DNA/RNA/protein extraction and analysis methods.

Strong interest in genomic and functional genomic questions and in the use of computational strategies to derive biological insights from sequence data.

Demonstrated scientific productivity through publications in relevant peer-reviewed journals.

Effective oral and written communication skills.

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled.



This is a 1 year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 of years paid postdoctoral experience.

Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.

This position requires completion of a background check.

Work will be primarily performed at: Bldg. 977, 717 Potter St., Berkeley, CA
