Brookhaven National Laboratory is a multipurpose research institution funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy s Office of Science. Located on the center of Long Island, New York, Brookhaven Lab brings world-class facilities and expertise to the most exciting and important questions in basic and applied science from the birth of our universe to the sustainable energy technology of tomorrow. We operate cutting-edge large-scale facilities for studies in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, applied science, and a wide range of advanced technologies. The Laboratory's almost 3,000 scientists, engineers, and support staff are joined each year by more than 4,000 visiting researchers from around the world. Our award-winning history, including seven Nobel Prizes, stretches back to 1947, and we continue to unravel mysteries from the nanoscale to the cosmic scale, and everything in between. Brookhaven is operated and managed by Brookhaven Science Associates, which was founded by the Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University, and Battelle, a nonprofit applied science and technology organization.

Organizational Overview

The Neutrino and Nuclear Chemistry Group focuses on the development of large scale Cherenkov and scintillator detectors for neutrino research. The group is currently a member of several international collaborations (1) SNO+ Neutrinoless Double-beta Decay; (2) LZ Dark Matter Search; (3) PROSPECT - Precision Oscillation and Spectrum Measurement, and (4) Daya Bay Reactor Antineutrino Experiment. Newly initiated R&D activities include reactor monitoring in non-proliferation applications, medical imaging, and water-based liquid scintillators.

Position Description

The successful candidate is expected to work on development and application of water-based or metal-doped liquid scintillators. Particular emphasis will be on detector development for the SNO+ and PROSPECT projects; and the production of metal-doped liquid scintillator deployed in a veto system for the LZ experiment.

The primary research responsibilities will include: (1) design and formulate metal-doped liquid scintillators and demonstrate feasibility for the SNO+ and PROSPECT experiments; (2) coordinate the production of proven metal-doped liquid scintillator for the LZ experiment; and (3) develop and advance applications of novel water-based liquid scintillators.

Position Requirements

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

* Ph.D. degree inNuclear Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry or a related field of chemistry, or Nuclear or High Energy Physics

* Knowledge in neutrino detection and radiation detection

* Ability to design large-scale (ton-scale) Cherenkov and scintillator detectors

* Hands-on experience working at underground laboratory is preferred

* Ability to travel for detector installation and operation.
