Position Description

The successful candidate will be responsible to design and conduct experiments to elucidate kinetics and mechanism of catalytic processes, utilizing the extensive resources at Brookhaven National Laboratory for both standard and advanced surface science and catalysis characterization, including use of the Center for Functional Nanomaterials and the National Synchrotron Light Source II.

She/he will participate in studies focused on elucidation of the morphological, electronic and chemical properties of model and powder catalysts. The main objective of this project is to generate basic knowledge that can be used to explain and predict the behavior of catalysts used for the activation of methane (CH4) to produce syngas (CO/H2) and methanol (CH3OH).

The experimental work will involve the characterization of the model catalysts using conventional surface science techniques (Low-Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Infrared Reflection and Absorbance Spectroscopy (IRRAS), Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES) and new in situ tools (Ambient Pressure -XPS, -IRRAS). Work will also be performed with powder catalysts, provided by outside collaborators, that will involve the use of in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (EXAFS, XANES) coupled to in house spectroscopy (Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (DRIFTS) and Raman).

This position is a two (2) year term appointment.
