The Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management of the University of California, Berkeley is seeking applicants for a postdoctoral scholar position in Environmental Biogeochemistry with Dr. C line Pallud to research selenium cycling, with a focus on integrating stable isotope geochemistry and microbiology to gain an improved understanding of biotic and abiotic selenium oxidation. Research will include controlled laboratory experiments to determine reaction rates and selenium isotope fractionation during microbial and abiotic selenium oxidation. Laboratory experiments with soils and sediments of two different field sites will provide complementary understanding of selenium oxidation in natural samples under well-defined conditions. By establishing a link between selenium oxidation and selenium isotope fractionation, the results will open new avenues for studies on selenium cycling and the fate of selenium as a micronutrient and contaminant. This project includes collaborations with Thomas Johnson (University of Illinois, Urbana Champlain), Kathrin Schilling (Royal Holloway, University of London), and Nathan Yee (Rutgers University).

Candidates must have completed all degree requirements except the dissertation or be enrolled in an accredited PhD or equivalent degree program in environmental geochemistry, biogeochemistry, geomicrobiology or related field at the time of application.

Candidates must have a PhD or equivalent degree in environmental geochemistry, biogeochemistry, geomicrobiology or related field by appointment start date. Experience in non-traditional stable isotope geochemistry and/or microbiology is required.

We seek a lab-oriented postdoctoral researcher in environmental geochemistry, biogeochemistry, geomicrobiology or related field. Experience in (bio)geochemistry of redox sensitive elements, kinetics and mechanisms of (bio)geochemical processes, and/or soil (bio)geochemistry is highly desirable. Successful applicants should be highly motivated and creative. They should demonstrate the ability to work independently and as a part of a team and have excellent written and verbal communication skills.

The anticipated start date for this appointment is October 1, 2016. The initial appointment is for 12 months, with renewal based on performance and funding. This is a full-time appointment.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and based on UC Berkeley Postdoc salary scale. The annual salary range for this position is $43,692 to $51,120. Generous benefits are included (
