JOB DESCRIPTIONPOSTDOCTORAL SCHOLAR POSITIONS IN COSMOLOGY/EXTRAGALACTIC SCIENCES
* School of Physical Sciences - Physics & Astronomy
Open September 16th, 2016 through January 31st, 2017
If you apply to this recruitment by January 31st, 2017, you will have until February 6th, 2017 to complete your application.
Applicants are invited for two postdoctoral scholar positions beginning Fall 2017. The postdoctoral scholars will work with Prof. Asantha Cooray to analyze and interpret data from several infrared imaging and spectroscopy surveys to understand the nature of dusty starburst galaxies, faint galaxies present during reionization, gravitationally lensed sub-mm galaxies, clustering of IR galaxies, and the cosmic far and near-IR backgrounds.
One of the positions is available for a postdoctoral scholar to work on the data analysis and science studies involving the infrared background with proposed SPHEREx (NASA) and on-going CIBER sounding rocket data to understand the fluctuations in the near-IR background. The fellow can also join an existing effort to follow-up interesting targets from Herschel extragalactic surveys. This position requires some combination of prior experience in analyzing datasets from HST/Spitzer/Herschel or other ground and space-based observatories.
The second position is more theoretical on topics related to cosmology, cosmic microwave background, large-scale structure, intensity mapping and cross-correlations among others. Experiences with CosmoMC, CAMB, halo modeling, weak lensing and galaxy clustering calculations (related to Euclid, SPHEREx etc) are desired. The postdoctoral fellow will provide theory support to the team for participation in a number of upcoming wide area surveys.
An experience with leading or initiating an independent research program and proposal writing is useful to work effectively in the UCI group led by Prof. Cooray. Recent postdocs and students in the group have made use of access to Keck Observatories through UC time and access to Herschel, Spitzer and Hubble data through various collaborations the team is participating.
The initial appointment will be for two years, with a third year contingent on successful performance and availability of funds. Salary will be determined based on experience. The position includes a separate research and travel fund to be used by the postdoctoral scholar.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent prior to beginning the appointment.
Applicants should send a CV, publication list, statement of research interests, and arrange for three letters of recommendation to be submitted via UC Irvine s online application system, RECRUIT, located at https://recruit.ap.uci.edu/apply/JPF03705.
For full consideration, applications should be received by January 31st 2017.
