Title: Postdoctoral Scholar Structural Biology Molecular and Cell Biology
Description: The Davies lab is seeking to recruit a postdoctoral scholar to take the lead in the collection and processing of electron microscopy data relating to the biogenesis of mitochondrial cristae and the thylakoid system of cyanobacteria. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in several collaborative research projects as well as establish novel methods for the of processing of tomographic data. The successful candidate should have experience in protein structure determination, excellent communication skills and a good knowledge of linux command line operations. Experience in electron cryo-microscopy and data collection on a JEOL3100 and Titan Krios is preferable but not essential.
Collect and process single particle and cryo-tomographic data Develop and implement methods for analyzing cryo-tomograms
Establish work flow for cryo-FIB thinning of specimens for electron cryo-tomography. Oversee running and maintenance of Linux workstations
Train lab members and collaborators in image processing and data collection methods Prepare results for publications, presentations, and grant proposals
Minimum/Basic Qualifications Required (At the time of application): Candidates must have completed all degree requirements except the dissertation or be enrolled in an accredited Ph.D or equivalent degree program in structural biology, biophysics, image processing or related fields.
Additional Required Qualifications (By start date):
Demonstration of independent research ability with first author publications in reputable international journals is required.
Experience in protein structure determination, image processing, Matlab and Linux OS and command line operations.
Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills. Experience with training of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Ph.D or equivalent degree.
Preferred qualifications (By start date):
Experience in cryo-electron microscope techniques, including sample preparation, and data collection using automatic software e.g. SerialEM.
Knowledge of single particle software packages e.g. Relion, EMAN, Spider.
This position reports to Dr. Karen Davies. The initial appointment will be at 100% time for 1 year with the expectation of extension based on satisfactory performance and availability of funding. The approximate start date of this position will be November 2016.
Salary: $43,692 $51,120 depending on qualifications. This position provides full benefits.
