Job Description

RTI s Discovery-Science-Technology Unit is seeking an individual for a full-time Postdoctoral Scientist/Engineer position in the Advanced Materials team to conduct research on novel surface coatings, thin film technologies, and biomedical applications, with specific emphasis in polymers research and development. This position is based at RTI s main campus in Research Triangle Park.

This position offers challenging opportunities and technical variety for a highly motivated research professional. Principal responsibilities will include surface coating process development, surface modification and characterization, formulation, coating process scale-up and production, and short and long-term technology development. The researcher will contribute to biomedical projects, using their expertise in materials science tissue engineering and controlled release technologies. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting research on process development, formulation, characterization (including particle sizing and imaging methods), collaborating with other RTI scientists on new and existing programs, and presenting results to staff, management, and the scientific community. All operations of the laboratory will be conducted in accordance with RTI s laboratory safety guidelines.

This is a one-year position with an optional one year extension.


* PhD. in Chemical or Biochemical Engineering, Materials Science, Polymer Chemistry, or related field. In-depth knowledge of solution-based surface science techniques including liquid coating deposition methods, wetting phenomenon, adhesion, surface modification, and surface self-assembly is required; additional experience in tissue engineering and materials for cell scaffolding is a plus.

* 1-5 years laboratory experience in several relevant technical areas, including colloids, emulsions, Langmuir-Blodgett films, or other areas of liquid-phase surface science phenomenon; nanomaterial research and development; characterization and dispersion stabilities; surface modification and technology development; coatings, thick and thin film technology; ink and paint formulation, polymerizations, suspension, and encapsulation;

* Highly interactive interpersonal skills for effective communication with project team members, various staff (including engineers, scientists, technicians, clients, vendors, etc), and the scientific community;

* Strong verbal and written communication skills including a track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals, and the ability to create and successfully implement experimental test plans.

* Demonstrated ability to work equally well independently and as part of a larger team;

* Self-motivation and strong attention to detail to efficiently complete tasks outlined in experimental test plans on schedule and within budget;

* Creative ability to solve problems that arise without compromising data quality;

* Must be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident.
