Summary of Job Duties
(Note: This summary will be used for keyword search) The Programs Director reports to the Director, Event Management and Protocol, and has overall responsibility for campus programming for public events intended to foster a culture of philanthropy. This includes oversight, management and supervision of one Limited Appointment (Administrative Assistant III), and up to two student employees and overall responsibility for strategic planning and design of programs that achieve Event Management and Protocol, campus, division and department goals and objectives. The Programs Director is responsible for contributing to long-range planning, decision-making and policy and procedure formulation and management, both related to primary program areas as well as objectives needed to reach department, division and campus goals. The Programs Director serves as primary liaison to several campus committees. The Programs Director is ultimately responsible for an annual budget of approximately $155,000.

Successful performance of these duties requires highly developed communication and organization skills, demonstrated capacity for leadership, ability to understand, interpret and communicate policy, work with diverse people, work under pressure and independently meet deadlines. The Programs Director must maintain broad knowledge of event management and protocol, development strategies and current UCSB Faculty and campus developments in order to provide a resource for planning and implementing programs for parents, alumni, donors, students, campus and community members. Must be able to work independently, act with sound judgment and high degree of confidentiality, anticipate job requirements, prioritize and coordinate multiple complex tasks. Must possess proficient knowledge of MS Office and have a demonstrated ability to quickly learn and manage various software programs integration into complex campus data programs.

Minimum Requirements

* Bachelor's degree in communication, marketing, public relations, or other field related to event management, and /or equivalent combination of education and experience.

* Advanced knowledge of concepts, principles, and best practices of event planning, including design and organizational production of complex events.

* Knowledge and skills to apply event management principles, practices, and techniques in support of effective event management, particularly high visibility, high impact, and high risk events.

* Highly developed political acumen skills and social perceptiveness to successfully meet the needs of clients and ensure guest satisfaction.

* Proven success in exercising sound judgment.

* Ability to maintain confidentiality, and act with tact and discretion.

* Experience guiding and mentoring less experienced staff.

* Skills to apply principles of personnel management to plan, organize, and motivate staff and volunteers.

* Experience in effective contract negotiation.

* Experience with developing event budgets and ability to forecast expenses.

* Demonstrated excellent social and communication skills.

* Demonstrated excellent organization and time management skills.
* Demonstrated frequent and proficient use of various software programs and web-based data bases.

Desirable Requirements
* Knowledge of the campus, including its vision, mission, goals, achievements, and infrastructure.
