Job Description

The DOE Joint Genome Institute (JGI) in Walnut Creek, CA (a division of the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab) has exciting opportunities available for scientific-based project managers. Will be responsible for providing a diverse range of moderately complex project management services for scientific & operational projects. Will be responsible for managing operational & scientific project initiation, project tracking, problem resolution, project closure & participate in strategic capacity planning & review. Will participate in technical review of projects, write detailed statements of work, identify priorities & produce reports for JGI'S user programs, operational staff & other stakeholders. Will support specific JGI user programs to improve JGI's sequencing processes & determine process-improvement, efficiencies & work-flow st&ardization. Tracks & reviews project & processes to ensure projects are on time & budget. This position is a member of the JGI Strategic Planning, Operations & Capability (SPOC) group. Position reports to the Workflow Project Manager.

Two positions are available. The selected c&idates will be hired at the Project Manager &/or Sr. Project Manager classification, depending upon the c&idate's level of experience & qualifications

Specific Job Duties
Essential:
- Manage scientific & operational project initiation, project tracking, problem resolution, project closure & participate in strategic capacity planning.
- Participate in technical review of proposals, write detailed statements of work, identify priorities & produce reports for JGI'S user program directors & other stakeholders.
- Work with the managers & heads of specific JGI scientific & operations programs to improve JGI's processes, efficiencies & work-flow.
- Work with project teams, track the project review processes & ensure projects meet deadlines & budget.
- Define st&ard products to streamline the sequencing processes & facilitate on-going development & underst&ing of JGI's core products.
- Serve as the primary contact for users & internal scientists & technicians on various scientific & operational projects/programs.
- Act as a liaison between scientists & scientific, technical & administrative support staff both internal & external to the JGI.
- Investigate, create & develop new methods & techniques for project advancement.

Marginal:
- Participate in various group meetings to discuss project management, efficiencies & work flow processes.
- Present work at meetings & conferences.
- Produce regular updates/reports on project & program progress.

Essential for the Sr. Project Manager:
In addition to the qualifications listed above, the Sr. Project Manager will:
- Operate at a higher level of independence & responsibility when carrying out assignments.
- Will provide resolution to a diverse range of complex technical problems & independently determine & develop approach to solutions.
- May supervise or oversee the activities of exempt & non-exempt employees.
