POSITION DESCRIPTION

PROGRAM PROFILE:
Standards Assessment and Accountability Services (SAAS) is involved extensively at the local, state, and national levels in planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating standards and assessment tools, methods, and systems. Some of SAAS work is aimed at revealing how well students or workers are learning or performing; other parts of our work address broader concerns of accountability and program or school success. SAAS serves as the test-development contractor for high-stakes assessment programs in several states. Its projects also examine the technical aspects of assessment, as well as focus on a range of assessment and accountability-related issues for various student populations (e.g., English language learners, students with disabilities) and for traditional academic areas and developing fields (e.g., alternative school accountability).

BRIEF POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The proofreader/copyeditor will work directly with SAAS coordinators, project managers, and other staff to proofread and copyedit test items, test forms, and related materials. Edit verification, track-changes edit entry, and other such tasks involved in the quality control process are also required.

SCOPE OF WORK:
Proofreading and copyediting test items, test forms, and related materials for elementary, middle, and/or high school assessments across diverse subject areas (e.g., reading/language arts, math, science, social studies).

NOTE: THIS IS A TEMPORARY ROLE WITH POTENTIAL TO TRANSITION TO A REGULAR BENEFITED POSITION.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Work directly with SAAS staff to:

Proofread and copyedit test items, test forms, and related materials used in statewide assessments, as well as research and development products.
Track and verify edits in Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat, among other tasks involved in the quality control process.
Ensure that test items, forms, and related materials adhere to project style guidelines. Use support tools, such as style guides, the Internet, and project documentation, to act as a project resource on style. When appropriate, ask pertinent clarifying questions about support tools, make suggestions for project-level style guide clarifications, and assist in designing processes and resources specific to project tasks.
Complete tasks with moderate autonomy, escalating concerns appropriately and making occasional recommendations about task scope.
Conduct activities collaboratively with the other members of the proofreading team.

QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must have:
Demonstrable professional proofreading experience (2+ years)
Excellent proofreading skills (a score of 90% or higher on the SAAS proofreading test)
An excellent grasp of the English language
Ability to work with high levels of concentration and accuracy under real timelines
Ability to manage multiple tasks/priorities concurrently
Ability to work as a team member
Ability to research and find information via the World Wide Web and other sources
Command of markup tools in Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat

Additional desired skills or qualifications:
A bachelor's degree in English or related field
Familiarity with test development processes
Experience working with style manuals or guidelines
Familiarity with content management
